Weird bugs in filter

babiluva

aka Connie
Does anyone know what these these small creatures are? I cannot see them well but I do see antennas. There are about 3-4 in there now. I am only using a power filter and is a 18 gallon biocube.

Probably amphipods. But you can Google Melev's Reef and go to the ID page. There's lots of good info and pics there.

Phew! Thought the tank was being raided by bugs. So, does this mean I should tank them out and put them in the tank rather than leaving them in the filter?

Sure, you could do that. Do you have anything in your tank that eats them?

They are probably all over the place in your live rock. Sounds like a few liked things in your filter ;)

Here is a link to the site Amazon was talking about.

Pods are a good thing so keep up the good work.

I actually see them in the tank too but MUCH smaller. I don't have any fish yet. Was thinking of a mandarin goby or a smaller type. I don't really know if I should get a fish that depends on pods. Any suggestions?

Please don't get a mandarin til you have some experience and the pod population gets much bigger.
I for one don't want to see anymore post of mandarin's starving to death.
Wait on that one......

It's good that you're thinking about these things. I think a 18g is too small to support a mandarin, or a fish that solely lives on pods. We had a canary blenny living happily in a 14g Biocube, but he ate prepared food in addition to hunting pods. I don't know if that's the norm, or if we got lucky.

There are lots of gobies that will be happy in a smaller tank. Clown gobies come to mind. You can also look at firefish...many choices :)

The entire tank (18 gallons) is filled with pods. I used to own a mandarin. But I agree I will wait until I buy another one. Any other suggestions? I don't like those creepy crawlers in there.
