Will Tunze Osmolator Magnets fit in a Display Tank?

Hi all,

I will be going away for vacation soon and I'm looking at getting an ATO system so I don't have to rely on friends to keep the water constantly topped off (although I'll have people checking the tank daily anyways). I have a 29 gallon tank running a HOB Octopus BH-1000 skimmer. The water level is fairly high in relation to the top to the tank. I think i only have about ~1" or so clearance until it would spill over.

My question is that the Tunze Osmolator magnets look pretty large, maybe 2-3" in diameter. If i placed them as high as possible, would I be able to keep the sensor high enough to maintain the water level that I currently have? I can afford to have the level a little lower, but not much more due to the required water level for the skimmer and asthetic reasons (I dont like seeing the water line from the tank).

I want to get the Tunze because of the good reviews, and when I get a house I will be upgrading to something larger (with a sump) so the Tunze will work well on that.

It should be able to give you the height your looking for in your display tank, the magnet on the out side is alot smaller than the one inside the tank so you should be able the have the inside one near the top of the tank and the outside magnet right below the trim. Also the sensors are located at the top of the inside magnet so it should be easy to have it up high.

Only issue i see, is that im not sure if the osmolator sensors can be directly attached to the aquarium. The manual suggests that you place the sensors in the sump or overflow and the eye sensor is looking at a flat unmoving surface.

I've never worked with the Tunze Osmolator but if the magnets didn't fit, I'm sure you could temporarily rig something up with acrylic and zip ties.

Anthony is probably right, but it is a violation of one of the essential rules of reefkeeping.

NEVER change plumbing right before a vacation...it is an invitation to disaster.

This is true! I've factored that in though and should have ample time to test it out. Also, I'll have someone checking the tank daily and won't have more than a few gallons in the top off bucket.
