Wow, Bruce Carlson's been busy in Atlanta!

160,000 gallon reef!! I think a road trip needs to be planned

my brother lives down there. he says that it is absolutely amazing. i can't wait to take a visit there this summer.

They use 1000w halides to light 2 stories down? And we worry about 250s being able to do sps in 18" of water?

Makes me think we're doing something wron....IE light is not the issue.

They're also using 2,000 watters. 72,000 watts total!!
And they're using artificial salts as well. I want to find out what salt their using and buy stock!

Even so, 2000 watts over 20+ feet of water?

Seriously though, what salt?

72,000 watts of light in a 160,000 gal tank is still only 2.222w a gallon.

Good 'ol IO by the pallet load.

Just a personal issue.

Someone was arguing with me on RC that you could put 500w of 1w halide bulbs over a small 18" deep tank, and you wouldnt have the intensity to keep SPS. I thoroughly dissagreed. His argument was par isnt additive. Mine is, theyre photons, they dont just dissapear because another bulb is using that space too...

people worry about 250w'ers being enough for 24" deep tanks. If 2000w is fine for 24 FOOT deep tanks, I think that proves my point.

I have corporate event at the Georgia Aquarium on March 20. We rented a room for lunch that will overlook the belugas. It's kind of sad that I want to see the reef & fish more than my customers...

I tried to see if they would put our corporate logo on the whales with temporary tatoos - and they said no, can you believe it? j/k

They are accomodating group visits and I'm sure we could get a BRS visit with behind-the-scenes tour. I'm sure Daire would love to organize it. LOL

You are right. The energy in a photon is based on the color of the light, not the intensity of the light. More intense light just means there are more photons being emitted. Given equal efficiency and focus of the resultant light, one 500w will be no better or worse than 500 1w as far as photosynthesis is concerned. Same photon energy & same number of photons = same effect.

And I thought a 160 gallon bucket was expensive!

What they are probably doing is what Atlantis does. Atlantis has 2 watts per gallon but the light is directed over a couple atoles. The rock is placed closer to the front of the tank and very well lit, but the large area behind the rock is not lit. It ads a whole bunch of water volume and space for fish while keeping the lighting cost slightly lower.

My future brother in law is one of the divers in the buluga whale tank and he has been giving my updates as the hole thing has been being built. I still have not been able to make it down there but when I do he will give me the behind the scenes look. He was there when they delivered the Instant ocean..... said it was F'in nuts.

...And there is our in for a BRS Road trip "Behind the scenes" tour hookup. ;)

so.....who's driving.....car pool? No that's not going to work I need to go down take pictures and make all of you envious. The group trip just won't work at all:D

Do you think a protien skimmer like this would be an overkill for my 20L?
