Neal's SPS & ZOA/PALY SYSTEM Coral & Livestock pics thread...

Thanks Chris... i was getting pretty concerned with a long term outage, but it seems all is ok... hope urs is bouncing back as well today :)

We should try and meet up again soon...

Everything seems to be good lights came on and corals, fish and critters look fine.

a little 2 week frag comparison...

so i thought after looking at these two pics it would be cool to post a little 2 week progression shot of my small rasta colony (not my mother colony)...

it the first you can see a 7th polyp beginning to form on the very middle left... on the next pic, that same polyp is fully formed and you can see an 8th forming between the two large ones on the bottom right side... with a 9th coming in on the very bottom middle of the group, below the larger one on the bottom, near the 7th polyp jus mentioned...

jus thought i would share, nothing too special :)

and now...

IMAG1212-1.jpg

alot of folks will say Rasta's grow very slow... as with any coral, the smaller the colony or frag, the slower starting it is... however, my mother colony started as 5 or 6 back in early may, and i now have nearly 40 polyps on her :)

thanks as always to anyone who takes any interest in my thread... i think ill take some new pics tonite, cuz you know im a pic freak ;)

Sorry for the late response but you've got an amazing tank Neal!

Sorry for the late response but you've got an amazing tank Neal!

hey man... thanks alot anthony!!

things are coming along :)

hardest thing to do, is jus have patience and let them do their thing... as well as waiting to setup the 180 ;)

My Barebottom, Live Rock "Fuge"...

Basically, its jus a 65g tall w/ 3 large pcs of Live Rock, with minimal flow... i will be adding more flow when i get the chance, as i had 2 older Koralia's which did a great job, but they were both leaking voltage into my system to they had to go, I hope to get a mp10 for it sometime in the relative near future...

I actually have 6 more really nice large peices of dried rock in which i hope to add to the 3 i have in here already, once i get some good flow back in here... they will be cured for 1 month at least before hand, even though they are pretty clean to start with... I jus want to play it safe ;)

My "fuge" is fed with a shared mag drive 9.5, which also feeds my dual BRS carbon reactor, i do not us phos media... I siphon out the detritus that settles here almost daily... this particular part of my system has been going against my believe in high flow throughout the entire system right now, but i jus need to replace the pumps that needed to be pulled...

In this area I also have a non reef safe (sps anyhow), Coral Beauty angel... as well as a pair of captive bred Bangaii Cardinals... I hope they will breed... i also have about 8 blue porcelian crabs, which I will be relocating to the maiin display soon for new touch visually... it is lit with nothing but (1) 30" t5 actinic...

My Sump...

I have (2) mag drive 9.5's.. one for the display, and one for the previously mentioned "fuge" and dual BRS carbon reactors... I have a dual pump Octopus Extreme 300, which i bought new in November 2008... i also have a Koralia magnum 6 powerheadh in the front left corner near the Display drain, so there is quite the current in my summp, jus like in my Display which as you can see, is (2) Mp40 ES... I beleive in alot of flow throughout a system to keep oxygen high and everything clean... again, i need to get a new pump to keep the "fuge" in the same conditions, as it normally is... also, the 1/2" feed that is flowing out in the far right corner of the sump, is the return from the Dual BRS carbon reactors... I have it so i can see visually what is going through the reactors, so i know when the pressure is low, and it needs to be cleaned/carbon needs to be replaced... I usually clean and change every two weeks anyhow... my sump stays very clean aside from what jus grows on everything, there is no detritus in there whatsoever, and i do not use filter socks... I allow my skimmer to remove detritus for me, and it does so quite well... especially when the flow through the "fuge" is up to my standards and likings...

I also use a simple flaot valve, gravity fed auto top off... utilizing a 5 gallon jug as the resorvoir... on average, lose about 2 gallons a day to evaporation, but that is fine, becuase i have a whole lot of air and water mixing for a very high level of oxygen in my system, which i like.... as well as gas exchange, and i think this is very important...

also, both the fuge and the display have dual mag 9.5 pumps which are plumbed together, s if one of them over needs to come offline, or i need to conserve energy used, such as in an outage, i can use jus one to run the whole system...

My systems runs entirely on the idea of no detritus, no sand, and high flow for a clean water column... along with an oversized skimmer, a few peices of live rock, and the proper addition of activated carbon... I also change 4.5 gallons of water every other day, and have been for nearly 2 full months... my sysytem has approximately 140 gallons of total water volume...

I use RO'd well water, and plan to finally setup my DI part of my water filter, which is a 5 stage RODI from the filter guys, however for the last 16 months since i got back into the hobby after a year off, i havent used anything but RO'd well water, and I would like to go back to DI as well... clearly, only RO'd water, as well as being from a well water source, which surely has some good tds, can still get some nice color and growth... however, I am thinking i can improve it further if i start using RODI again, with TDS at 0...

I am also going to start dosing Lugol's sparingly when i get a bottle soon...

At this point in time, i dose 3 ounces daily of both BRS two part, as well as about 6 ounces of BRS two part based magnesium as well, and again, cahnge 4.5 gallons every other day, and i will soon be using and lugols regiment...

Whats on my frag racks??? the right one...

on here I have a couple more peices that are part of my collection... they are 2 small chalices... one is a 6 eye Miami Hurricane, and 3 eye emerald mummy eye... the rest of the peices on this rack, will be moved along... the Hurricane is really starting to color up nicely, and has adjusted to the high light and is doing very well i would have to say, even this is my first shot at chalices... the miami hurricane, started as 2 eyes in early July, and has the 6th nearly finished coming in now... i do not feed either of them, and they get high light and good flow around them... the emerald mummy eye was not fragged as well, and has taken a bit more time to recover, so it hasnt done as well quite yet, but i'm sure once it catches up, it will do well... i really didnt have any desire to keep LPS, but i wanted to see how my system could support them, and so far, i would have to say, they probably dont need so much light, and would most likely have better colors in less light, but they seem to be fine so far, and growing, and its only been about 8 to 9 weeks...
