New and need help

I have a 55g with live rock and some coral. I am new to saltwater and I am trying to do this right. I have fluval 405 filter, a protein skimmer and t5 lighting. When I bought the tank and stand they told me I could not have a sump. I want to do the best I can and I am trying to learn. My tank has been up for 8 mths. I need all the help I can get. Thanks

Why can't a 55 have a sump? Do u have enough space in the stand? U can install an overflow box, have it run down to like a 30 or 40 breeder DIY sump or if u find a great deal on a sump then as a return I can make a U connection on the top so it can hang on the top border of the tank.......

There is no way I can put one under the stand. It is not open on the top or the back. What other equipment do I need to maintain the tank. If u have any other suggestion would be much appreciated.. Thanks

You can run a sump with that tank. Can get an HOB overflow box or drill the back and use something like the glass-holes overflow setup. Don't think you can fit anything bigger than a 10G in the stand, so you might have to run the sump on the side of the tank. It would be perfect if you could run a bigger sump on the side of the 55 and hide it within another cabnet.

There are some sumps that are small enough to fit through the front doors. I have a 55 gal and my sump is still undergoing work but it was premade from sealife systems but it fits through the front. I have another used one if you need it. It's about the same size.

The store that I bought the tank and stand from told me one would not fit. I dont even know where to begin to start a sump. I am brand new to this.

sounds like its already filled with rock and water....drilling it would be impossible unless he started from scratch, removed everything, trying to help, dont want his guy to be mislead and make a mess. your best bet would be to get a hob overflow and go from there. you dont really need a sump though, if someone told you that you do thats not true

are you sure they didnt say you dont need one or that you cant?

They told me it was best to have one but it will not work with my stand. I have asked the owner if there was a way I can have one made, he said probably not because its enclosed. Also funny thing is had water tested today and nitrates are high.
