120G Drain noise- Is it normal?

I got my 120G filled with the return pump running to make final adjustments. I was able to silent the overflow, but I can hear the drain a lot! And it's bothering me...

Not sure if this is just how it is with bigger tanks, but my 72G is dead silent compared to the "splashing" water sound coming from the 1.5" drain on this one. I am also running a Mag18 which sounds a lot louder than my Mag7 in my 72G, but I guess that's expected



For people with bigger tanks and/or experience with plumbing;

-Is there a trick to silence the drain more?
-I have 2 90 degree elbows on the drain pipe, is that too much? Should I have piped it diferently?

Put a reverse durso on the drain (search it or look in my original build thread for pictures). It helps slow down the water and gives the air a way to escape.

That's what I tried to do it here;


Did I do it wrong? It does continue with another drain opening though, could that be the issue?

You're probably getting a lot of splashing because of the air turbulence at that junction... water 'slamming' into the '+' instead of flowing down. A reverse durso uses a Wye so the water flows and air goes up through the hole you put in the cap.

So I re-did the drain pipe... But I am still hearing splashing noise. But I don't think it's coming from the durso pipe, it sounds like it's coming from the first 90 degree elbow from the overflow.

Does that make sense? Is it possible the water pressure coming down from the overflow is making noise when hitting the 90 degree turn?

It looks like the bottom of the reverse duroso is deeper than needed. I would shorten that, then put a cap on top of the reverse duroso with a small hole to vent air. The cap will contain a lot of that splashing noise that's coming from inside the pipe.

I do have the cap with 4 holes on top of the Durso. So do you think that the length of the Durso going into to the water could be making the noise? Could the noise be coming from the first 90 degree elbow from water rushing through the turn? I swear I hear it coming from that side...

Oh, missed that. The depth probably isn't helping, but I don't think it's the main soruce of noise. What happens if you re-arrange the pile of LR so that it breaks up the waterfall?

How much flow are you running? You might just be hitting the high end of what a duroso can do reasonably quietly.

The pile of LR is separated from where it drains by a piece of glass. It's open on the bottom and the top. I initially was going to have it draining on both sides of the drain chamber like in the first video, but the noise was too much.


I am running a Mag18 with 1" return pipes and 1.5" drain... I have however dialed it down a bit. I split the return to feed a spray bar in my Fuge, another one in my Frag chamber and possibily my Aqua UV.

I was playing with the flow last night and opened all 3 ball valves. It helped with the noise a bit, I was wondering if the flow is too much as well.

Your reverse Durso is too small 3" & run it as deep as you can. The larger the chamber for the air to separate the better. Can post a picture later when I get home if you want.

I was literally reading this old thread with you and John helping Dave back in 2009 when you replied and was going to try to make the Durso pipe wider and see if it helps... Weird and freaky!!!

I have dual glass_holes 1500gph kits (2-1.5" per each kit)on both ends of my 150g which drain down to a 90g (1st pic) where my skimmer sits and then that drains down to a 55g (2nd pic) which is my fuge and return.

Ok, makes sense now. I have only 1 drain on mine which I'm trying to push about 1500GPH. It definitely sounds like I need a wider Durso to make this work...

Yes 3" pipe for the reverse Durso. Also if water is not standing int he Durso none of this will matter. SO make sure you stand pipe is larger than the last fitting going into the bulkhead. The whole in the top od the durso controlls how much of the water in the stand pips ca siphon through that fitting. Think of a Soda bottle tipped up side down it will glug hold glug hold as the water is changing space with the air. Put the right size whole in the Soda bottle and it flow out nice and even.

The Durso has to work properly for the reverse to work. The images above are a modified reverse durso and are not optimal for allow air to escape the water air mixture in the drain. They are still forcing the air into the sump. you need horizontal flow in front of the durso so the air coming out is on the top and water is on the bottom, while they help they are not as effective.

I am running 1500gpr or so and I think you can see the 3" reverse durso pretty much stop all issues with air. And yes the system is running full speed.
