Went back to halides

Nothing beats Halides and T5.

And in the end, MH costs less or just as much as LED.

Well would say 10k halides with VHO 03 actinics are about as good as it gets, but VHO runs the electrical up pretty bad.

Wait... I want the photon....

How long did you grow the acros for under LED?

Not my post but..... I've been running my Sps dominant tank for 2 years with great growth. I also know a coral farmer who uses nothing but Radions and he's doing pretty well for him self as well.
I do agree that messing with the spectrum of your leds can cause to many problems. Us as humans are to quick to think we need to fiddle with things and "fix" things, instead of just finding a proven set of Kelvin settings and leaving it alone.
People need to stop adjusting their leds to solely get the "look" they want. It's really not about what we see but about what the corals need and thrive off. 98% of the tanks I've seen say they didn't do good with Leds were user errors. Just my 2 cents.

What we like for viewing and what actually is good for the corals can be two different things.

.

bingo!!!!!!!! +1000

I agree with dong. These animals like stability. Think of how much of a fuss we used to make just replacing our mh bulbs let alone changing to a different type of bulb. Now people change the spectrum on a whim.

I switched from Phoenix 14k in lumenbright reflectors to 4 sol blues 3 years ago this month. Then crashed my tank due to a heater failure. So I have basicly started from scratch with both mh and led. I have no trouble with growth with the led though I did add 2 t5 several months back for color. I can tell you I'm happy with the combo and will stay with until these lights die.

as with any equipment one will find themselves with varying degrees of success. I remember using a couple different ballast on my mh until I was satisfied. I personally believe that as we place different emphasis on different areas of husbandry we find pieces of equipment that will work better for some than others.

To the op i say good luck I am sure you will have success

Things are beginning to get their original colors back
This war coral was almost completely bleached out

This one too

Contest chalice is beginning to spread out onto the disk

Turning green and purple again slowly

Clams seem to enjoy the light

Favia frag is slowly growing but coloring nicely

Think this stuff would grow under no lights at all!

Always under the watchful eyes of at least one of these guys too

What's the dimensionsof that tank? Looking back on some other threads I'm wondering if your leds were hung to low? The photon 48 is a big powerful light and with 80-90° Optics having the light to close could of been causing the bleaching you got.
With leds (especially with optics) lps and other low light corals can easily get to much light. I keep a lot of lower light corals under overhangs.
Tanks looking good though and it seems like things are getting back to normal and happy. Wish you the best of luck.

I may have had it too low but I had it like a foot and a half up off the tank. I still have the fixture and may eventually go back to it sometime.

Radium 20K is the king of MH bulb, their price has come down a lot, now you can get one for $70 shipped.
BTW, Radium is a 100 year old company.

12 inches
But keep in mind I upped the intensity of the led only a few % per week and only made it up to 60% max
I understand.... I just think with that shallow of a tank you shouldn't of had optics on the leds. Any optics are going to strongly intensify the output.
When I had my Chinese Leds I maxed out at 55-60% on the blue and 35-40% on the whites and I had them for over a year. You got to 60% in 4 weeks?
I strongly believe you'd have greater success with no optics and the light hung around 12" off the surface, on a lower intensity
Look at the par readings with 90°Optics..... 1000 at the surface and 250 on the sand bed? That's a deep tank. So with 2" of sand and the light 16" to the surface you sand bed was getting g around 300-400 par on 60%... So you lower light lps were getting to much light imo...

I know your happy with the halide so I'll leave it alone. Just throwing in my two cents. :)
