Help w/fish trapped in overflow

Any suggestions on best way of catching a wrasse in an overflow? Overflow is about 20" deep. Difficult getting my hands in or seeing him when he goes to the bottom.

I always just pull out the drain and then retrieve said fish from the filter sock downstairs

I've heard of filling the overflow with sand (forcing the fish to the top), netting the fish out, then siphoning the sand back out. Assuming in this case you aren't talking about one of the wrasses that burrow into the sand...

same here , shut off the return pump and pull the drains, I pulled mine partially out to let the water drain out slowly leaving maybe 1/4" of water in the bottom then I pulled the plumbing out and the fish was on the bottom easy to scoop out.

The same thing happened to me yesterday. I siphoned out most of the water then was able to reach in there and gently grab him with my had. But pulling the drain seems like a good idea too.

That's how I do it. Shut down return and just siphon out overflow area use net to grab him and just refill overflow area. Easy work.

+1 for pull the drain and let the fish take a ride to the sump. Worked well for me.

not sure why this is even a question. catching a fish in an overflow is one of the easiest thing. it's not like chasing him in the tank.
there literally not a whole lot of room in there for him to hide, just put the fish net or pound net in there and catch him.
maybe you have a 4x4 foot cube where the overflow box in in the corner and you have no access to the overflow box perhaps?
