Any chance we could do a torch contest next?

I don't have any torches of my own, but I've been thinking about taking the plunge on one for some time now and I'd love to see some inspirational pictures from members of the club who have torches that are really thriving in their care.

@Mixed Reefer has some reasonable priced torches from Peabody, MA

What’s going on with your torches?
They look perfectly fine until they start peeling away from the skeleton. It’s funny well not really but even when the head comes off the skeleton it looks perfectly healthy.

I gave up on torches. Only risk I'll take is on tank raised ones. These brightly colored "holy Grails" don't last for me. Imported from Malaysia, put in a medicated tank, then shipped out. Can anyone show me a Holy Grail Colony that they've had for years thriving??

Must be having some kind of swing if it’s bailing out
Nothing shows in my testing I can test first thing after a water change and before a water change and I get just about no consumption. I use reef crystals for salt and do a 10% weekly water change I dose nothing everything besides torches and sticks (pending the new testers) does well. What would cause no consumption? I can’t figure it out and everything looks good so I just keep doing what I’m doing and do weekly water changes lol. Older somewhat recent pic to show tank in question

I’d be curious about your swings as well. After many years of trial and error I have found that torches hate alk swings. They seem to hate them even more than some sps. On my trident my alk swings no more than .3-.4 dkh a day.

First picture, middle one is my tsa holy grail. I have had it for about 4 years now. This picture is from last year. I don’t have any current ones but it looks the same. I do agree on these Malaysian “holy grails” that are popping up everywhere now. They look good for a bit then lose their gold or just melt away. My wife bought one (3rd photo) over a year ago from a local store that had actually stayed strong tho, it’s not as colorful as the tsa or asd but it is nice. Second picture is of my ASD holy grail. This one imo, is nicer than the TSA one. I have only had it for about 2 months now but it came from a very large colony

How’s your PH?

Ive had Euphyllia polyp bailout from low alk or -0- PO4. Its been a long time but those are the 2 culprits Id look at. try and stabilize your alk and also try target feeding to help with their energy for strength and color.

or I had bailout when a file fish was nippin...any fish being aggressive?

That’s what I thought as well so tested and was still getting next to nothing for alk consumption in a week.

It’s got a good range lol. Last time I tested from 7.7-8.3 I think was the highest I ever saw it. Full house here three big dogs, bengal cat, now a bunny, two adults and two kids. House is insulated very well spray foam in the attic so quite sealed up with a heat pump for heat and cooling so windows only open when it’s cool out. I tried a co2 scrubber and didn’t see much benefit from it I have pretty good surface agitation I tried kalk before but all that did was make my numbers climb through the roof with again no consumption lol. Maybe it’s just the tank I need a do over I’ll just go bigger lol.

Yea I’ll do a full test panel today I’m a manual tester with Salifert kits and when I had no consumption like it’s been for some time I gave up testing. I just did weekly water changes and kept my temp and salinity in check and everything minus torches has been fine. I only just got a few sticks as I noticed a nub of digi that just about died off is doing really well and maybe even growing so I moved a stylo from another tank into it and grabbed a rando acro frag at osa and so far so good. Sidetracked but no aggression to my torches from any fish I do have a filefish in there but he seems a space cadet.

Well, somethings off there because your corals aren’t happy no consumption. If it isn’t phosphate, nitrates, etc. I would really look at.PH. I feel when it’s suppressed. My corals are not happy in the uptake is little to none. With a higher pH everything looks so much better in the demand for elk is there. Just my two cents. One other thing is calibrate your PH probe. Maybe that’s off. let’s see those results

Try opening windows and running an airline from your skimmer to increase PH. My Ph when the house is sealed is low 8s but when windows open I get to 8.3 ish (IMO a sweet spot). PH probes can expire and need to be replaced (I've been told). Regular calibration every couple months is necessary too.

Also, my Filefish was fine until he wasn't. Just saying.

When you say consumption...do you mean that your corals arent uptaking ALk and Calc? maybe mag is low? try boosting to 1400.

Are you test kits new? old? maybe take samples to a fish store to have them double-check. something ain't right!

I don’t have any controllers all salifert test kits even a back up alk to confirm numbers lol. I’ve been installing a sump on my 30 breeder this morning just wrapped that up I’ll work on doing some testing get a baseline and test daily for a little to try and see what’s going on.
