Open Brain Coral on rockwork rather than sandbed?

So I bought a large open brain tonight, roughly 6 inches in diameter fully open, not sure of the size of it's base. It's mounted to a 4" frag disc.

I know that adult open brains don't attach to anything and sit freely on the sand in the wild, and often wash up on shore. But what I was wondering is, (not sure if it is attached or glued to the frag disc) but since it has the frag disc beneath it, it would barely make contact with the sand if left on the sand bed anyways, so would it be okay to have it on the rock work? I have a decently flat, though inclined, center rock in my tank that is completely empty and this would look real nice there.

Otherwise I do have a spot on the sand bed for it but it's currently a perfect fit, so as it gets bigger, not sure how well it will fit or if it may be cramped for space as I hear that they shouldn't touch surrounding rocks or else they can get tissue damage, so on the rock work itself I honestly think it would come into less contact with rocks on it's edges. If need be however, I could very easily rearranged my tank to have the sand bed fully accommodate this coral no problem. Just figured i'd ask before rearranging anything.

Welp, I put in on the sand bed i've decided and it looks AMAZING. Funny because it's so bright and colorful that now the rest of my tank looks extremely bland and dull colored. I don't remember anything else in my tank ever looking this colorful, but i'm hoping that the colors on this brain coral never dull down. Think I may get a few new T5 bulbs to make the coloration more actinic because it's currently 37.5% actinic and 62.5% white and the white is just a little too much for me. Maybe i'll get another tru blue and a fiji purple or something to replace a white and a 50/50.

Thanks! I'm VERY satisfied. Especially to have gotten it for a price in the double digits, and not to mention beyond pricing, that this puppy is 5 inches in diameter. Believe it or not, I truly don't feel like the picture does it justice. It DOES show the coloration very well, but it doesn't even dip a finger into the pool of how flourescent it is.

It's actually a combination of my favorite color (neon green) and my fiance's favorite color (plum purple) so we both love it very much.
Granted purple hornets have those 2 colors as well, but for the price I paid for this 5" diameter coral, i'd of gotten 3/4 of one polyp the size of an M&M. Lol.

EDIT: Having some xenia touch part of it shouldn't piss it off will it?

Oh, and does anyone want some free xenia? Lol.

awesome looking brain!!!

and the sand is definitely the best for it...I havn't seen any open brains that were mounted on a frag disk as they usually have a cone shaped bottom (which also usually makes it difficult to sit on rockwork)

Yeah I honestly have no idea how the heck they managed to mount it to a flat disc either, but hey, they did. Biggest damn frag disc i've ever seen too. Lol.

Very nice, placement is important so is the creatures you keep tangs ect ect.... Making them hard to keep (for the people that have tangs and other crabs). I have them on the sand and on the rock work. I had one I had for ten years and moved it to another tank and lost it. So if its happy let it be and move the one you like the least if needed. Good luck with that sweet piece and keep posting pictures.

Any ideas why it isn't fully opened today? Maybe just getting situated or something. Nothing ever touches it except the occaisonal xenia or a hermit.
