Hello All,

Petco is selling this fish at different locations and under a few different names—Gold Nugget Maroon, Thunder Maroon, and even Lightning Maroon! The employee said they come from ORA under those SKUs, but she admitted that they don't look like true Maroons to her.

ChatGPT keeps telling me that this isn't a Maroon when I have had it ID the fish for me. It says the fish is just a red pigmented platinum ocellaris being sold under the name Thunder Maroon because the branding sells and people don't know better. It says that it's missing many of the physical traits of a true Maroon—like the cheek spine, fin shape, and body shape—and looks more like an Ocellaris than anything else.

What do you guys think? Is ORA really passing these off as Maroons when they're really Ocellaris?

Thanks!

Genetic wise, they are Maroon clownfish.
AI not yet trained well in the field of this hobby, so they make mistakes.

Thanks! Can you please teach me your ways? How can you tell?

Because they are a type of Lighting Maroon clownfish and their parents were lighting maroon clownfish.
It is well documented.

To me it looks like the surly mouth of a maroon clownfish.
Yes, the mouth shape is a tell tale sign also.
And there is no financial incentive for ORA to mislead the hobbyists, all sorts of clownfish in the hobby are breeding like rabbits.

By the way, a “red pigmented platinum ocellaris “ is much more rare fish to get. Basically you can’t buy one right now.
If anyone find one for sale at reasonable price, I want it.

ChatGPT apparently not a salt water hobbyist.

Ok, well thanks for all the input.

Would you believe me if I told you that it paired up almost instantly with a juvenile premium phantom male and that they're actually getting along?

Yes, I believe it, as maroon clownfish is able to pair with Ocellaris clownfish and produce offsprings, such as Blood Orange clownfish, a hybrid from a female Maroon Clownfish and a male Ocellaris Clownfish.
