Quiet Sump! Finally!

smcnally

Tankless
So I was thinking today about my sump plumbing and how it has always been pretty noisey. It sucked because my tank is right next to my couch. My drain plumbing is two 1" pipes that each go into their own 1.5" couplers and then drain into a filter sock for each pipe. Well, I noticed the water splashed a lot as it came out of the pipe against itself. So I reduced the 1.5" coupler to a 1" hole, it still splashed but was quieter. So I pulled those reducers out and reduced each one down to 3/4" and it is silent. What it does is lets the water built up a bit in the pipe and it comes out like a smooth stream. I was worried that I may have reduced it too much, but I'm only running about 650 gph through my sump so I think it will be fine. It's been running all day so far and my levels seem to be staying the same as they were before.

Nice! After much work my sump+overflow is quiet and it is where I sleep.

I would think it'll be fine Steve. Congrats on quieting it.

What happens though if a snail gets into the drain with that sudden constriction?

why not just run the lines under water?.

Maybe Ill try doing what you did with my plumbing. My tanks been driving me crazy lately. The sump is too noisy, skimmers not skimming good, nitrates high, I could go on and on. I use an overflow box for my sump and I found when I put the return pipe under water my overflow sounded like a toilet.

You really need to be careful with the overflow boxes. Using one is an extra challenge. I just would not do it because of the risk of losing syphon.

thats why you use 2 you need 2 of everthing in this hobby.

I tried what you did there SMcnally..... what a difference!!!! I just went from 1-1/4'' down to 1''.... very nice. Great idea ... thanks

I tried that at first, but I was still getting noise (not as much, but still annoying).

Glad it helped!

Ok maybe I'm a little slow I had the noise problem and went with a CPR Overflow with the lifter pump. Works awesome and can't hear a thing. The problem I have is air bubbles in my sump. And they pass through to my Refuge so all my plants have these micro bubbles. I have a 1.25 hose now and will reduce to a 1' just to see iff it clears my problem. If any one has had this problem and resolved it another way please let me know. Thanks in advance. You guys realize this post is way old right? JK! Great thread I am sure it will help a ton of peeps!

I will try that first. I may still reduce the overflow hose as well. Because the bubbles that come out aren't Micro but pretty big. Salt creep is out of control. my sump is like a whirl pool LOL I will let you guys know how I make out. Ummm... So I can keep the change? I mean thanks for the tip! ;)
