High Magnesium

KenG

I'm with Scott
I recently tested my parameters and all looks good with the exception of Magnesium which is reading high - about 1700-1800. I was wondering if this was possible and if there are any adverse effects of high Mg.

I see a little coraline turning white as others have noted with high Mg, but all the corals look good - polyps extended... About 2 months ago I finished a batch of 2 part (Ca/Alk) and dosed Mg to get to this high level. Things have only gotten better since then.

Any thoughts on high Mg?

I would think you might want to do some gradual water changes to bring it back into a more natural level 1200-1300.

Thanks for the info. Looks like no ill effects to chaeto or other good algae.

We have not had a problem with bryopsis. Have not seen a decrease in other algaes I am assuming due to the health of my Fromia. He is finding plenty to eat.

you may notice diffuculty dosing or maintaining calcium levels. you may want to bring the level back to 1200-1300 ppm by doing h20 changes.

I was recently talking to B at AG about MG levels and I believe that he stated that Bec ran hers around 1600 and I think that we all know how beautiful her corals were.

The fact that she ran them at 1600 doesnt mean that has anything to do with how her corals look.

I don't think he was saying that mag at 1600 would guarantee beautiful corals, he was answering if elevated mag was a danger to corals, so at least what he contributed was useful.

Right, its just that it seems like everytime some piece of anectdotal piece of information gets released about a nice tank, it spins itself off into some sort of misinformed methodology.

If you push your magnesium high, it shouldnt bother much. Just keep an eye on your alkalinity and Ca.

Interesting, perhaps this was why the Bryopsis (assuming that the technique really works) in her tank was under control. I know that at one point she was having some serious problems with it.

Thanks. That is what I was trying to get accross. I probably should not have added in the part about how beautiful her tank was. I see where someone could have inferred that high MG translates to nice coral.
