Where to buy chemicals in bulk

Does anyone know of a good source for bulk carbon and sodium carbonate besides two part solutions? Their shipping is a little pricey.

you can get a lot of baking soda from places like wholesale clubs (BJ's, Costco, Sam's Club, etc.)

Do you mean bulk calcium?

You can buy CaCl2 in the form of DowFlake at places like Home Depot during the winter. It's about $15 for a 40 pound sack.

You can also get Mrs. Wages pickling lime for about $1.25/pound from some online place. People have done group orders from that website in the past. You might be able to find information by searching the archives. (pickling lime is not for 2-part additives, but supplies ca and alk evenly when saturated in your top-off water).

And if you want to make it into sodium carbonate you can just cook it in your oven to drive off the carbon dioxide.

Going to ask a newbie question but what do you use this for. Calcium, Alk., etc.

Coral, clams, and many other animals in our tanks build their skeletons & shells from calcium and carbonate dissolved in the water. As they use these substances, we have to replace them.
Baking soda will provide carbonate, which we measure as alkalinity.
Calcium chloride in Dowflake provides calcium.
The two dissolved in some RODI water make excellent supplements for calcium carbonate. They'll also provide sodium and chloride, but they just contribute to your salinity.

Ok so what your saying is that the two mixed togeter in RODI water gives you salt water . I tried to read some articles by Randy Holmes Farley but they just go over my head.

Nah, don't mix them together.
Mix baking soda with RODI and keep it in a container.
Mix Dowflake with RODI water and keep it in a container.

The baking soda solution will bump up your carbonate (which we measure as alkalinity).

The Dowflake solution will bump up your calcium.

Test your tank's alk and calcium. Add a little of either solution to the tank when you need them.

That's the take home message. :)

Calcium, alkalinity are important for the growth/health of corals.

DowFlake (Calcium Cloride) mixed with RODI water is used to maintain calicum levels at 400- 450 Part per million (ppm).

Baking soda mixed with RODI water is used to maintain alkalinity at between 7 dkh and 11 dkh.

Ok thank you both, but another question comes up how much RODI and how much of the other two sorry for sounding like a pita. Another thing is that I have a Calcium Reactor how dose this play in with the others.

Measure your alk and calcium.
Your calcium reactor is good for keeping things in range, once you have them in range.
If either alk or calcium drops, use these solutions to get back in range.

You're not going to need these very often with your calcium reactor.
You can make it up on the spot.
I'd start with a teaspoon or two in about 10oz of RODI.
Mix thoroughly, and pour slowly into tank.
Wait several hours, then see if that gets you back on target.
If not, repeat.
