i recently bought 4 peppermint shrimp for my 55 because i have aptasia or atleast thats what i think it is. I've heard it called aptasia but they are the green with pink tipped ones and they grow very fast and the tank is full of them.do these guys not eat this kind or something because they haven't eaten one and they've been in there for over a month. any thoughts?

Hmm. Couple of thoughts.
Make sure you have peppermint shrimp, and not camel shrimp. I forget how to tell 'em apart, but I think you can tell from pics. Do a search. Camel shrimp won't touch majanos (tulip anemones).
Second thing is peppermints eat aiptasia only when they're really hungry. If they don't get fed, they'll chow on the anemones.

very easy to tell, the camel shrimp have a hump on their back like a camel. the peps dont.

I would agree with what Moe K said, I think camel shrimp are a little less translucent and varigated white; peppermint shrimp are red and varigated with black, if I recall correctly; peppermints are pretty voracious eaters, I once had three peppermints eat a 6" cerianthus anemone overnight! they showed no signs of interst during the day, so I thought I was o.k.; was I wrong. good luck.

Since when to pepermints eat anything but aiptasia ?

M.

My thoughts are that Mauro nailed it. I have never seen a pink tipped aiptasia, and peps don't eat mojanos....which are the anemones you probably have.

Peppermints won't eat them. You can kill them with injections of kalkwasser, they die pretty easily compared with aiptasia. Also, they are motile, so if you have a rock with them you can move the rock to somewhere they won't like and they will jump off.

My buddy out in Vegas had peppermints eat his aiptasia, then move over to his yellow polyps. From there they went to zoanthids...

Wait, are we agreeing that peps' will eat zoas after they are done aiptasia?

I got a big problem then!

I haven't had them touch my zoas... only the aiptasia and that rock flower anemone. I think it really depends on the bunch of peps and what they have a taste for...

A few anecdotal reports, Jeremy.
Not sure we're all accepting peppermints eat zoanthids, but it has reportedly happened to people. Maybe if one keeps the shrimp fed they'll not touch zoanthids?

i always feed a lil bit more than the fish will eat, the shrimp and crabs eat it all before it disolves

I would actually love to have a rock with some of those anemones on it.
I have a FO tank that is begging for something like that.

thanks for all the help. they are definitely the pink tipped green ones so i guess ill have to inject them. and i do have pep shrimp, bought them from AG.

Jennifer, look for DEIGNAN14's thread "tearing down the house". He and his mom have some rock with tulips on them. They're tearing down the tank and I'm sure you could get some.
