Is there any way to get zoas to grow in a clump?

Short of putting zoas on the substrate, is there a way to limit their spread and grow them in a clump (like you see in many tanks)?

I have had them spread far and wide off their original rock that I inserted into the rockwork. I guess I just have to prune them?

Large round fragdiscs............Look at the clumps in this pic. You can see my field of polyps.....

Hehe thanks.. Great picture !

Now question for ya.. if you were to put that frag disc onto your rock formation, the Zoas will spread right off, right?

Wow chew* tell me how did you get that rock to be so purple i love the color

He's a big fan of using (road grade) calcium ice melt for his suppliments.:p
Ask him.....he'll tell yah.
Bravo on you're usage of extreme bromide, chew.

Lol stingy.

In answer to the question of keeping them on the fragdiscs, the sand bed is a good deterrent.

In answer to how I got my rock that purple......High magnesium (1500), kalk and bionic 2 part with 14k pheonix bulbs.

As far as icemelt ahem.......It melts ice quite well......

My question, is magnesium at 1500 a safe parameter where I maintain at 1250 to 1350? If kalkwasser is being used as well as B-Ionic 2 part isn't the kalk and the calcium from B-ionic going to raise the calcium a little on the high side? Just had to ask if there was something I was missing or misunderstood in the dosing.

The first time I had my water tested at a meeting my Mg was 1505.
I can tell you I have no problems with bryopsis.lol
I use B-Ionic and Home made 2 part also. The magnesium suppliment I used was B-Ionic.

Is it safe? Honestly I'm not a chemical analysyst expert all i can tell you is my own personal experience, I had no ill effects and It seemed that at 1500 that MG was being consumed at a higher rate as coraline was growing at an alarming rate.

I'm guessing had I reached a saturation point where coraline just couldn't grow anymore due to lack of places to grow a problem might have arrised.

As far as kalk its balanced but its not perfect, I use b-ionic to correct this. Yes alkalinity will run lower but then again I tend to run my tank low nutrient and maintain my KH around 7.9-8.0.

As with everything no single way is right and YMMV.

Sorry for off topic.

Heh.. so back on topic :) The guys that have their tank of the month (reef central) basically just keep pruning their zoas? Or do they just place the discs into the coral for the photo op?

Thanks for the reply on the mag parameters chew*, and apology for drtechno for taking the thread off course.

I'd agree with constant pruning then frag more zoos and palys with what they've trimmed. Some people will predrill the live rock and peg the plugs in the holes for constant movement to determine an ideal location that's shows best results of a corals health.
