Where To Buy LR

Any one know a pretty cheap place to get live rock? I live in Concord, MA. Nearest LFS is Fish Nook, they sell for $11.99 a pound. I also checked Tropical Isle in Framingham, they were 9 something a pound. Anywhere cheaper? Or know any good online places? I'm looking for enough rock for a 38g.

Thanks,
Adam

Try the "Rock for sale" thread in our sale forums. People are always trying to sell rocks and other assorted stuff around here. Usually way cheaper than $10/Pound.

Sea Creatures in Revere sells LR for 7.00 per pound 6.50 10+ pounds and 6.00 for 20+ pounds.

Yeah not only is it cheaper buying from a fellow reefer, but if it's been in somebody's tank for a while, the rock will be cured and covered in way more life than what one would normally find at the LFS.

Another vote for buying from a fellow reefer, it will be much cheaper and most likely way nicer.

If you're looking to fill a tank, no doubt buy the lot from a reefer getting out.

But for that perfect piece, it's nice to be able to pick through a big tank of it.

I don't begrudge any LFS for the prices they charge for their livestock (or liverock), especially if they've got good stuff and take good care of it.

I've bought a good amount of rock from Fish Nook at $12/lb. and have always been happy with what I picked out of there.

I do wish they were a BRS sponsor or I'd buy more stuff there. (You listening guys? ;) )

Of the stuff I have bought so far(for my 5g), most of it has been from fish nook. I think they are a very good LFS, and have helped me alot. The employees there are great, and contrary to what most people say about LFSs they have actually talked me out of sales. When I compare stock there to other stores (especially big ones like petco or petsmart) Fish Nooks live stock always looks much healthier. I just don't think my wallet can handle all the new stuff for the tank and all that LR at 4x the price.

One last warning: if you are buying LR from a member here who is 'getting out', their husbandry may have slipped a bit, and they may also have pests in their rock....like mojanos, aiptasia, etc.

Sea Creatures 1455 Mineral Spring Ave, N. Providence, R.I. - (401) 354-6477
John usually has a big ole hunking pile of LR in a Rubber Maid tub there for a fair price. Not sure what he's getting now for Fiji or tonga. But it will be a lot less than the other prices you mentioned.

Skiptons has the best rock I've seen at an LFS and they have TONS of it. Fully cured, good shapes, and thr price is pretty good ($6-$7/ pound).

I've gone to this Sea Creatures recently. He sells Fiji (I believe that is the name) for $5 a pound and Tonga branch for $6 a pound. Call in to verify before making that trip yourself though cause I would not want you to drive that far on just my word. (http://www.yellowbot.com/sea-creature-aquarium-north-providence-ri.html)

The owner/manager let me search through his two tubs packed with rocks for 1/2 and hour to select what I wanted. My wife was pissed but I got what I wanted at what I think is a decent price. He was a really nice guy and very helpful.

sea creatures n.prov best place iv been 2 and i have ben 2 a lot of places he has 2 big plastic tanks full at all times just go and pick $$$$$$$$

how fast do you need it. I think the best option long term is get some dead rock from Marc its very cheap...and not too long down the road you will have live rock. Plus you don't have to worry about pests.

If I were to do it again I would buy most of the rock from Marco. Then just buy a few choice pieces to seed the tank with.

Given your location, outside of the threads here bearing in mind what JayM said above I'd say Marc for dry rock or this if your willing to drive - it's SWEEEEET!

Buying some other members' rock caused me to create the first line in my signature.

There are MANY members here (myself included) who would give a big thumbs up on the Marco rock.

It's as smart as....a box of rocks :p
