woke up with a puddle...?

So i woke up with maybe a gallon of water on the floor next to my tank, ran through the floor and partially ruined the ceiling in the room below the tank (for a 2nd time )

I have NO idea where this water came from though.

The water was all located around a white bucket that was on the floor, but the white bucket had been there for weeks with no water in it... i'm testing it now to see if it leaks anyways.

Its hard to say if i lost any tank water.. it looks like a pretty standard night of evaporation really... but maybe a bit was lost.

But, i'm not losing any more water, so what the hell kind of leak corrects itself over night?

The pipes aren't leaking, the overflow is not leaking, the tank is not leaking..

There is a little bit of water around the sump.. but i think thats just from when i played with it yesterday afternoon, because i splashed a little bit (but no not a gallons worth of splashing)

Any ideas?

How about this... power loss over night, display keeps gravity draining into the sump but the pump down there can't put the water back up top, flooded the sump and before you woke up the power came back on and the sump pump turned on and brought everything back into the display... you would never know unless you had an alarm...

i didn't lose enough water, and the tank has been tested multiple times to make sure the sump can handle a power outage... me and mike were working on the tank yesterday, and even then we turned the power off and everything was fine.

I dont think you would have that much water return to your sump in a powerloss anyway, your overflow is not that big. Your sump could certainly handle any amount that would return. Good thought though........

on top of all this... i woke up and my golden teardrop maxima looks EXTREMELY pissed off...

I'm not a clam expert, but if the mantle is receded alll the way down into the the shell, but the shell is open, what does that mean??

Not a good sign. Check to see if a fish, crab, ect. is bothering it.

no fish would be bothering it... i peeled a hermit crab and nassarius snail off of its shell... but other than that??

Some fish can nip at their mantle. I also had clownfish that hosted to my Dersa which caused it to do the same thing.

i have 2 clownfish and a blue damselfish... the blue damsel isn't bothering it, and the clownfish are hosting the anemone on the other side of the tank.


I'll keep an eye out, but should i be worried about losing it?

Try moving him up a little onto a rock to get him a little more light. I thought he looked a little weird yesterday, but didn't want to worry you about it. He may be too deep to get good light there or just unhappy. He kind of looked a little pale in color but was certainly open. Usually it is something bothering them when stuff like that happens, or sometimes a major meltdown. Such a big clam though, he should be pretty hardy.

I can try to move him up some though. The derasa next to him looks fine if that matters ....

Are you using an ATO? Did you check the salinity?

Not using an ATO.. but no i haven't checked the salinity yet.

It shouldn't have changed though even if i did lose some water.

Yeah, if no ATO salinity will not change from a leak.

It sounds like the only explanation is that you did spill more water than you thought yesterday and it migrated out from under the stand to the bucket.

Yes
I'd pull him and give him the "smell test"
This will do a couple of things,
First as you get your hand near he should close tight, if not and you pick him up he should absolutely close up if not move onto the smell test.


It's a tough one on the water, Is there a chance there's a snail in your overflow box, I've seen it before where mr snail takes a walk at night strolls over the drain pipe and causes a mess then moves on to hide the evidence.

Thats another thing that worries me about the clam, when i grasp it its not closing up.
