moisture sensor question

Blueflu1

The Acan Reaper!
Well, I opened my stand doors today to discover about 4 gallons of water in the stand. Apparently I didn't screw my Ca Reactor closed enough last night and it filled the stand up with water. Both my reactors, my sump, my CO2 bottle, chemicals, and a powerstrip were sitting in water.

Anyone know of an inexpensive and decent moisture sensor or something like that which has an audible alarm?

They have them at HD. It's got two metal contacts on the bottom. When the water completes the circuit, the alarm goes off.

sucks way less than a flood and damaged floors

I might have to try that. The floor of my stand is now bowed downward in the center from the last time this happened.

Anyone else know of any other kinds? Anything that can shut off electricity so I can have it shut off my reactor when this happens?

yup, i've got the same thing. at least now if i have a flood i'll hopefully catch it before it's 30 gallons ;) .

Good product, senses small amounts of water too...

WOW, I thought this post was a joke. This just happened to me a couple of hrs ago. I had just hooked up a protein skimmer, and it sits right over my electrical outlets. I didnt like the looks of it. So I went out and got one of those alarms from HD just tonight. What I rigged up is a Tupperware container right under the skimmer. It sits on the edge of my stand. I then put the alarm in the container figuring it would fill up first before hitting the floor. Well about an hr ago, I shut down my main pump to feed the fish, and low and behold my alarm went off. It only had about 1/2in of water in the container by time I got to it, and shut everything down. The part that sux is my wife just dozed off on the couch, yup. She can back me on this one, they do work. and they are loud, and the 20 dollars I paid for it just saved me a ceiling. My tank is on the 2nd floor. Go get one, its worth it. Its kind of hard to see, but thats a picture behind my tank with the alarm under the skimmer. Good Luck
Derek

ingenious setup Derek! Hate to say it, but you better get used to that alarm with the SS-65

EDIT: The water level looks a bit high in that....and a fishing line mod on that rio pump will make better foam.

Great, so you mean staring at it for the last 12hrs is just the begining? Im going to take it out. I cannot risk this thing overflowing, not even once. Im going to drill a hole in the top, and make an overflow line into a bucket. I dont think that will be to hard or affect the performance(kind of a oxymoron). What other mods do they have for it, and how can I find them?? Im going to put it into a sump eventually, but I really dont have the time to do it. I also want to explore the idea of building a refug in the back of my tank. I have a Fluval 405, then it goes into the next comp were there is a skimmer. Then I want to take out the rest of the bio-balls and build a refug. I just need to learn how to work with acrylic. Maybe a newbie class on it, I know a tank we can use to try it on.

I just picked up one of the alarms. I might look for a pan of some type to put all my equipment in that isn't in the sump. Thanks for the help.

i might be getting one for the basement.... just hooked up my ro/di with a float valve on it.....
