T5 Fixture suggestions for 72bow

Swimmin With The Fishies
I am in the planning stages of buying things for my new 72bow and was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on T5 lighting fixtures.

Is is all about the fixture/bulbs/reflectors? I am interested in the multiple plug style for dawn/dusk feature or programmable lighting.

Not looking for the absolute best but just info so I can start looking for deals.

Well, you'll want SLR (single lens reflectors) as well as an actively cooled fixture... those two things right there are what make t5's worth using what so ever...

on top of that you'll likely want a 4, 5, or 6 bulb fixture to go over your 4 foot 72 gallon bowfront tank.

My personally recommendations would be:
4 bulb ATI Powermodule/Sunpower (if you want to keep mainly softies/lps)
5 bulb Aquactinics tx5 fixture if you're looking for a true mixed reef tank (sps, soft, lps)
6 bulb ATI Powermodule/Sunpower if you're looking for an SPS dominated tank.

Those are some "higher end" fixtures... but at the same time even the most expensive of the fixtures listed (6 bulb ATI) won't completely break the bank.. now that the fixtures have been out for a little while you may be able to find some good deals on them used...

Oh and all of the above fixtures have good, single lens reflectors, fans for active cooling, acrylic splash guards, and solid electronic ballasts.

If those fixtures are more than what you're looking to spend, i'd maybe take a peak at the Nova Extreme models as well as the sunlight supply Tek fixtures.... but personally if you're not going for one of the better t5 fixtures, i wouldn't go t5 at all..

I am going for a true mixed reef.

For ballasts are the stock ones on fixtures usually good or do some need upgrading?

Also what is overdriving lights? and would a lower end fixture with higher end bulbs and individual reflectors be the same as just going for a "high-end" setup?

I've got the nova pro extreme 6x54 w 48" fixture...and I really like it. Has the dual fans, dual switches for day/night, easy to clean...and you can get them for under $400

stock ballasts are almost always fine... as long as you don't get a dirt cheap fixture the ballast wont need upgrading.

Overdriving t5's is referring mainly to using t5's on an icecap 660 or 430 ballast.... it "overdrives" the t5's to give off more intense light... and it works well, but there are a few disadvantaged to it..
1. It will cost you more, the ballasts to overdrive are expensive
2. The bulbs and fixture will run hotter, because more wattage is pushed through the bulbs
3. Because the bulbs run hotter, they will burn out quicker and need to be replaced more often
4. The color temperature (K rating) or the bulb will change because it's not being driven to normal wattages.

In my opinion over driving t5's on a 72 gallon bowfront doesn't make much sense... unless you really wanted to do an icecap retrofit with icecap ballasts and have an SPS dominated tank.

For a true mixed reef tank my recommendation stands at the Aquactinic tx5 fixture...

Nova Extreme's are deceptive... you think you are getting a good deal because the bulbs are included in the fixture when you purchase it... but these bulbs are crap... burn out fast, don't give out much light, and look crappy as well... all and all it's not a horrible fixture.. but there's a reason why it's cheaper than the rest..

also, for the 48" versions of the nova extreme, they don't offer a 5,6, or 7 bulb fixture... they only offer a 4 or 8 bulb fixture... 4 is to little, and 8 is too much.

I might not be giving the tek t5 light fixture enough credit.. as it does have good reflectors and ballasts, however you NEED to purchase an acrylic splash shield for it separately.. it is also not actively cooled, so bulb output is decreased over time, and bulbs burn out quicker.

I'm sorry, i stand corrected i guess they do offer a 6 bulb version ;) .

Do the nova extreme's come with acrylic splash shields?

I currently am running a 4 bulb ATI Powermodule over my 72 bow. I am currently using that tank for fowlr tank. But it provides enough light to make my carpet anemone very happy in that tank. It is a very nice light. But it is expensive.
