I have an overflow with 2 drains and am only using 1 of em at the moment. The water is almost at the top of the rim.I have shortened the riser tube 2 times equalling about an 1" and it doesn't change the level..what am I missing?

It has a glass overflow with a black acylic cover. It seems or I thought you could adjust it depending on the siphen tubes hieght.

Is the water level high in BOTH the tank and the overflow, or just in the tank but not the overflow?

^ what John said......if the level of the water in the tank is higher than the overflow, you may need to clean out your overflows teeth...mine get clogged with algae and coraline.

or...slow down your return pump

maybe it has two drains for a reason you may need to use both or throttle down your return pump

As everyone else has said, The water lever in the display is determined by the height of the over flow teeth. The level in the overflow is determined by the standpie drain. You usually want this slightly lower than the overflow teeh so it does not waterfll and make allot of noise.

You can throttle back your return pump also. I have to do that in my 120 acrylic until I open up the teeth on my internal overflow.

Just the tank.

Eventually I want to use the other drain to feed my skimmer.I have used the same pump on a 75 with a smaller drain w/o issues.

Can't be that I just set it up 3 weeks ago.

Don't like restricting things.

I had already opened the teeth wider than the factory spacing as I couldn't imagine it handling much flow with 1/8 slots.

Thanks for the help looks like I'll be tweaking something soon.

If it's just the level in the tank thats running high, and it was at the level you want in the past - Then either the teeth are fouled somehow, and or, if possible maybe the shroud around the overflow got moved up slightly.

It has nothing to do with the standpipe/duroso if the level inside the overflow box is not just as high as in the tank.

I'd start by giving the teeth a good scrubbing with a toothbrush.

Your 120gal is a new setup the comb cut out on the overflows aren't even begun to accumulate anything to clog it and you decided to use only one overflow. Using one overflow is half the problem and the other fix is to throttle down the return pump. The pump is adding water quicker than one overflow can handle. Just as 67belvedere posted previous.

What about tee'ing off of your return line to run the skimmer? This way you're slowing the return without restricting the pump, and running your skimmer at the sanme time. FWIW, restricting pumps (within reason) isn't a bad thing.
