New Moorish Idol

Beautiful. I would love one but I personally would not trust trying one. Yours looks very healthy and happy.

Thanks for all the kind words. I felt the same as above and told myself, i would try the species once and if I could house for a year then i might try again down the road. I honestly did not expect to reach the goal, but am pleasantly surprised. I am lucky in that this guy loves to eat everything from Nori to clams on the half-shell, and everything else you can thing of. Hence, nutrition is less of a concern. Believe it or not, she even gorges on Ocean Nutrition flake food on the rare occasion I feed it (monthly, for a change). ::

Really cool thread.
I remember netting these things at the reef on base when I lived in Hawaii. We'd bring them back to our dorm, put them in the tank, and they'd die in a few days. What a waste.

Glad you've had some great success here. Wishing you many more years.
Keep the pics coming. We're all living vicariously through you. ;)

Hi my name is mike. (Mikethefishman) I was wondering how is the moorish idol is doing in the reef tank. I was told they will eat some of the soft corals like the pom pom. Also I have a copperband do u think would do ok together.

Hi Mike - the Idol continues to do very well. We are coming-up on 1-year in our DT at the end of this month. With regard to eating sessile invert, she cleaned out all of our Pulsing Xenia, which I happen to like. I cannot speak to much else because we do not have a lot. I can tell you she doesn't bother our leather coral or the Kenya trees nor any of the mushrooms. For me, it is one of the species that takes precedence if able to keep alive. I'll replace what she has munched on when she is gone some day. Hopefully, no time soon.

As far as compatibility with a copper banded, I also cannot comment.

Regards, Keith a.k.a Rudy

Happy Birthday/Anniversary. We've been hosting this beauty for over a year now. I feel very lucky given this species well-established poor success rate. I hope to be celebrating again in another year.

Awesome! So glad he's still doing well!

awesome....you have a pic to show us how she looks?

Sure - taken this morning whilst grazing on Nori during the DT's sunrise. :)

nice post a few more for us!!!

Awesome fish!

how is this fish doing/???? any new pics

Idol doing well, 15+ months, since introduction to the DT. I tend to not take any pics of him when he is lacking his high fin extension, which he is lacking right now. He tends to loos it every once and a while then seemingly over night, it is back again 5-6" in length. I am guessing it gets broken off from the squabbling with tank mates, mostly between it a Yellow Tang and a Blue Tang. Fortunately, it is all bravado and no real fish on fish violence.

Perhaps nutrition is another reason it loses its streamer? But, he eats about as well as I could ever imagine or provide. Nobody in the DT eats the daily Nori bunch more ravenously than the Idol. It also continues to consume about any/all items I offer, including OSI flakes & pellets <go figure>. His favorite appears to be Clams on the half-shell. Regardless, I keep its, and everyone else's, diet highly varied. To which I account for at least a portion of the success with this species.

When his streamer grows back, likely some time soon, I'll try to get some video of him and his tank mates. Thanks for your continued interest.
