1000 watt metal halide lights for 100 dollars ea!(25)

I was just browsing the Want Ad, and saw this add for a man selling 25 used 1000 watt metal halide flood lights for 100 dollars each! ...would this be ideal for a fish tank?

if so...do they cost alot in electricity to run?

Well, they would cost about 4 times more to run than 250W bulbs.

As Stve said, If a 250w bulb costs $10 a month to run, then the 1000w would cost $40 as month

The color spectrum on the bulbs wouldn't be right for corals. You would probably get a lot of nuisance algae and heat.

The color spectrum would be great for corals, and anything photosynthetic(Algae). THey'd just be really ugly to look at.

$100 is almost exactly what it costs for one of these setups new. $100 on a lot of sites for 1000w magnetic ballast, and all the fittings. You just need a reflector ($20).

Aquarium MH setups are more expensive because of the nice looking fixtures, and the fact that a lot of us like the silent electronic ballasts.

when i was running 5 x 400watters above my tank in the uk i contemplated going to 3x 1000 watters instead. There are 1000 watt lamps available in the useable spectrum which we require. BUT they are extremely expensive to run (1kw) and they give off a tremendous amount of heat.
