140 gallon 4 sided starphire rimless build thread

if the acrylic overflow is not removeable then they did not screw up. if they had just done a slit you would not be able to get the plug through the slit and would require about a one inch half hole, which is what you have there. if the overflow is removeable then they did screw up.

I would argue that for a $1800 high quality custom tank, part of what you are paying for is them making SURE they understand what you're asking for. It makes absolutely no sense to put a hole in the bottom of an overflow like that. If that's what they thought he was asking for, they should have at least initiated a conversation along the lines of;

"do you understand that doing that would very strange and illogical design? Am I understanding what you're asking for correctly? Can I draw a picture and send it to you to make sure we are talking about the same idea?"

That $1800 is paying for more than just glass and silicone IMO.

The over flow issue is easy. A hole in the overflow is not necessary, use a square piece of black acrylic to run the wires down the outside of the overflow.
Given the outlet for the wires has to be at least as high as the overflow, running the wires through the overflow is not necessary.

You might take a look at reefkeeper2 tank he has the same overflow setup, might also consider asking
him yourself

The biggest mistake they made was that I asked for them to cut a slot between the glass overflow and the acrylic so I could run my wires between. For some reason the guy Derek told me to talk to he cut straight thew the acrylic cover as well as the glass overflow thus making my overflow useless now. I could barely sleep last night feeling like I spend almost 2 grand on a tank that I could have gotten for pretty much half the price.

That is unacceptable on so many levels. The silicone is beyond awful. Even if the person misunderstood you why would he go ahead and build the overflow that way? They are a custom tank builder? Don't they realize that wouldn't work? Usually an addition bulkhead in the overflow with a stand pipe several inches above the water level as a chase to run wires up is used. Aquarium Gallery had that in the two 6' x 6' tanks they had. They ran the wires for the lights and power heads through it. I don't get it, I'm scratching my head and saying, "WHY?????"
