14g bio cube

I have a 14 g Biodiversity that I set up but had bad film accumulating at the top and feel a littlevto under experienced to work wit a mano reef at the moment any advice would be greatly appreciated has anyone used biocubes before I know they're supposed to be all inclusive butbi feel.like a protient skimmer is really neccessary and what about the lighting in my inexperienced opinion I think that it is really only sufficient for soft corals I could be wrong though

14 g Biodiversity? Is that the name of the tank/model?
The film is accumulating because your filter is not cleaning the waters surface.A skimmer would help but if you don't get it to skim the surface kinda a waste...kinda.Your probably right about the lighting but more info on the nano's manufacturer/model would help.

I have all three sizes of the biocubes, and I do not have any film on the water. Get a skimmer. The Oceanic biocube skimmer actually works if you hang it correctly in the recommended chamber. Usually you can find them cheaper on ebay. As for the lights, I stick with softies, but if you place things near the very top some people have done well with easy hard corals.

that is what I have I got it for a steal from petco cause it was a floor model and the store manager is a good friend of mine so it did not come with anything but the original supplies nothing additional,

This is what I did. I also changed up the return pump to a MJ900 (I think this is what it was). This helped improve the flow rate. You need surface turbulence to mix up the film. A koralia Nano or 1 goes a long way even though it takes up tank space.

I am really thinking having for inside longterm in it
-liverock
- just zoas for corals and have a variety of colors and have the rock completely covered in different colored zoas like this awesome rock I bought from frank from the BRS heres a not great picture of the rock its looks absolutely spectacular in person

-pigmy angel (or fire but I think they might get a little big)
- 2cleaner wrasses
- 3 cleaner shrimps
-2 fire shrimp
- 2 peppermint shrimp
- 1 arrow crab
- 2 assorted brittle starfish (various colors)
- banded pipe fish
-cubicius boxfish (until it gets about 3 inches or so)
- arbian dottyback

in case its gone by a different name I've seen them called neon dottyback and so many different other names
-2 emerald crabs
-10 or so assorted hermit crabs
- pair of sailfin mollies (they do awesome in salt and breed like crazy so it would be a good food source for the other animals)
- 2 manderin (either psyhadelic, green, or red)
- clown fish (i was thinking either a pair of maroon with yellowstripe, or pink skunk, or small tomato until they reach about 3 inches and move to another tank)
- knight goby (typically sold a fish or brackish water but I find do much better in salt tanks
theres a few different damsels I have thought about such as bali red, or velvet and another I've recently seen thats spotted, but I find they get a little to aggressive for my liking


this is my ideal, maybe its to much for 14 maybe a 29 biocube would be better fit, I really don't know any feed back would be greatly appreciated

pointing it up I can't believe I didn't think of that, but does that just have things build up in the tank as a result
also how would I go about water changes
and making sure there are pods for the piperfish and manderin to eat or should I try and get some that eat live brine?

If the BC14 is like the BC29, I made the second chamber in mine a refugium. Ditch the bioballs and tray in chamber 2. I put some LR rubble in it and it was a pod factory back there. As for the WC, I used to shut everything down, siphon out 5 gals and replace with new SW. Every other WC I would siphon out the back chambers just to keep the free of detritus.

Your list of fish for a 14 gallon tank is a bit much. Most of those fish need to be in a larger tank. A single mandarin would be difficult to keep let alone two as they almost all need to eat live food. You can get a tank bred mandarine from ora and they are reported to eat frozen but still need about a 30 gallon tank. Pipe fish are very hard to keep and also need a larger tank, minimus 50 gallons. I would look into the specific needs of the live stock before putting it in a 14.

well like I had said when the fish get to big I would move them to another tank I have several set up anything over 3inches would be moved and I have a steady supply of live brine that I get every week.

thats a great idea for the chamber what about a light for it? or just keep rubble in it?

Brine are not very nutritious and not a great food for mandarin, typically eat pods in a well established tank. look into nano fish for the 14. Here is a link to live aquaria's list of nano fish.

I might.just scrapt the meanderin unless they'll way live brine ive had problems maintaining pods

My suggestion would be cut the stocking list in half if not more. I have a 10 gal set up right now with a pair of clowns a cleaner shrimp and 4 hermits. I wouldn't even think of adding any more fish unless i upgraded.

I have a 14g Biocube. First off I would get a skimmer, I have the BioCube one and it is fine for that tank. I would upgrade the return pump or get a nano powerhead for better flow. One of the worst mistakes you can make is overstocking. I did that in the 14 and a nano tank is harder to maintain than larger ones, so a mistake is usually harder to fix. I would not add more than 3-4 fish, depending on size, you are also going to have coral and inverts. For corals, I would stick to softies and some LPS. Just watch what you add, all livestock adds waste and in a nano water levels are harder to maintain. Just don't overstock.

You can also upgrade your lighting with either a clamp on MH or a DIY LED kit. This will allow you to have more types of coral in your tank.
