20L sump for a 75 gallon

I am thinking of making my 20 long into a diy sump for a future 75 gallon build. I plan to place baffles with one section containing a skimmer. My question is whether it's worth using a refugium in this build or save that space in the sump for other forms of filtration. Will a small refugium in a 20 long really contribute much nutrient export in a 75 gallon tank or is it simply too small proportionally?

The short answer is no on the refugium.

I use a 20L for a sump for my 60 cube and I use no baffles at all. Trust me, you won't need them. Just put the return pump on the other end of the skimmer and you will have no microbubbles at all. That assumes you are putting the correct (read: not too much, 3 - 5x turnover) flow through the sump.

I wouldn't bother with the fuge of that size. I think you will appreciate more space in the long run. Easier to clean etc.

Thanks for the advice guys. I did kind of feel as though a refugium in a section 20 long would end up being only about 3-4 gallons in size and would contribute very little if anything to nutrient export. Andy do you have a thread that shows your sump and setup?

I dis agree I run a 20 long sump with three chambers with my 75. One chamber being a fuge. Chaetto grows mad and I know my 2 wrasses and manderin appreciate it

Interesting. I think I looked at your thread Owen and was dying to see updates. Do you ever feel as though you would like more space for something like a calcium reactor or phosban reactor or anything else that you feel the refugium section is taking up space from?
