$45 for sand??? How much do I need

I went to a not so local fish store today because I was in the area. I am looking for sand to fill my 72g bow. They obviously tried to sell me the uber expensive "live sand" but even the Regular stuff was like $45 for a 50lb bag. Seems a bit ridiculous to me.

Anyone have advice on how much sand I need for a 72bow? And also where is a good place to get it? (prices if you know em)

look around the board... there is usually some dry sand for cheap... i know when i have some, i jus give it away... thats your best bet... with your tank, 40 lbs is gonna give you a 1/2" to 3/4"... so the amount used is up to u...

Ya like he said above its just a personal preferance whether you want it deep or not, and also like he said u can usually get some here for free or really cheap

The only reason i have a deep sandbed is for my tube anems, if notfor them I would only have less than 1/4"... and that is about right for live sand at an LFS, lots of people are getting away from sandbeds, make SURE you want a sandbed prior to buying.... you may even want to go the dolemite route if you aren't getting sand based inverts... Dolemite iw wicked cheap if you just want floor cover.

this wasn't live sand, this was the regular stuff.

then surely you wana shop elsewhere, cuz thats ridiculous... again, look to fellow reefers for assistance... however, i dont feel its a good idea, to ever take anyone else's "live sand" for several reasons... best to clean it and dry it out if your gonna do that... disturbing and established sand bed can be quite toxic...
