A cool idea "Coral Sharing"

A neat idea. Kind of a tank "crash insurance" and a good way to help out newbies or trade for cool bits.

Some members already give away free frags, this would allow a kind of cool reciprocation.

Anyhow, maybe we are cool and generous enough that we don't need anything "official" to prompt this kind of generosity but its still a neat idea.

Kind of a cool idea. I had a Zoa frag that I put on a rock for a short time. It spread onto the rock and I pulled the plug out and bang. I have zoas on the rock I wanted and the frag is still 100% intact. That would be an idea too. Borrow them. Maybe put a deposit down and get it back with the frag. Would only work for a few though with my scenario.

It's a good idea provided the club stays intact with all members sharing off corals within the club. Meetings always held at the same location within a reasonable distance of members able to drive without costing a full tank of gas. Members able to make meetings to keep in good standards with the club and rules. Busy life activities always prevent many from not making all meetings unless meetings are held every 2 months. Not make a few $$ on the side as corals given/shared multiplied more than expected unless a stipulation is made that sales of corals go back to the club to buy a colony to frag and divided amongst members. A newsletter of who has what then soon it'll require a BOD then they'll have their own forum and it'll be dedicated to Keepers of the Corals in short the KC's. Okay....that's enough from me, don't know when to stop typing.

I've been pretty much doing this for the last year or so. I won't sell frags - too much hassle once money comes into the equation. I'd like to think that if I have a crash at some point, one of the many folks who got frags from me for free would reciprocate.

I'd be down for an official thing like this if you wanted to organize it, I have a few things that I'd like to spread around just in case...

This would work given a proper set of rules and regulations as well as solid record keeping. Personally I think this would be a great idea if done correctly and could benefit the entire community. I'd be more than happy to volunteer myself to start creating something like this that would work and protect all parties involved.

Then what happens when someone spreads pests, or kills it in their tank? I am sure there might be some members out there who wouldnt care if they spread something thru the club. I am aware that members use a QT, and treat things, but these pests do manage to make there way thru sometimes. Seems like a good idea, but I think like Matt said, memebers do this on their own, with the hopes people would return the favor. I would think that is the best way to keep it.

Well I think there would need to be certain requirements and everything to be eligible for something like this. I have some idea, lets see if I have some time today to whip up a basic plan and we can see what people think (need a little caffeine in the system before the brain starts working)

No real "plan" need. It's really just a matter of finding fellow hobbyists, who have good husbandry skills and are upright enough to have a "gentleman's agreement" on a handshake.
FWIW, you don't want to spread frags out to only one person, you want to spread it out to several people, to backup the backup.

Keep track of who you gave stuff to as I found out the hard way when restarting my tank that nobody I had given frags too returned the favor and I didn't know where anything had gone. I was lucky enough to have quite a few friends that I had given frags to that helped me out and a few members that stepped up and helped out even though I had never given them anything except for maybe a good deal in the past.

That said you are obviously welcome to any frags from me in the future as is anyone else that has helped me along the way.

If anyone would be interested in starting something like this up and helping me come up with some rules and regulations as well as procedure for going about doing this I'd love to draft something for all members to view. I have started an outline on a way to make this effective and efficient for everyone who wishes to partake as well as precautionary measures to ensure the "insurance" tank does not suffer. drop me a pm if you're interested in helping start something along these lines.

I'm ceartainly up for spreading some frags around. A few people were very generous with giving me corals when I first started up my tank. Some of those were downsizing at the time. I hope I can give back at some point. I think I have a few frags I could part with at this point.
