A little about my current tanks

I'm relatively new to this forum but have been on various forums and websites reading and learning since I started with saltwater aquariums around 2010. I've had a few tanks along the way, ranging from 5-gallon gateway picos to more moderately sized display systems. I've never had a system larger than 100 gallons but hope to one day.

My most recent tanks started close to two years ago when a friend was resetting their larger tank and chatting about it. I decided that dipping my toe back in was maybe a good thing (my wife and I were settled in a house, and our kids were recently out of diapers). Having had tanks in the past, I knew the full cost of larger systems would be hard to stomach at first, and I was just interested in trying things out again.

So, to really do the minimum, I got a 15-gallon Innovative Marine all-in-one. This little tank was a bargain at $99. I got a second-hand light from the friend who was resetting, an AI Prime with just a little use, a cheap Amazon optical eye ATO, a 100-watt Cobalt Neotherm, and a BRS 5-stage RODI, and I was ready to go. This little tank was up and running. I had a few misadventures getting coral into this tank, and temp/salinity swings eventually convinced me to swap to a larger Fiji Cube 32-gallon tank. This larger nano was much more stable and is still up and running. After about a year and a couple of other ups and downs, I sensed that some of the fish I had added needed more space, so I purchased a used 90-gallon reef-ready tank.

This larger tank needed a little love, and I had a good time doing some little things like painting the stand and replumbing. My goal was to build a tank that didn’t break the bank but took advantage of the stability of a larger volume. I also wanted to keep an open layout with lots of room for fish to swim and corals to grow.

I got this new larger setup full of water and running last spring (2024) and have had some good times. I wanted to take it slow getting the tank running and added a community of fish (maroon clown, tomini tang, melanurus wrasse, sleeper goby, and a powder blue tang). From there, I added a set of tester corals (a couple of softies and some montipora). After battling a dino outbreak in late summer (I think dosing silica was the key to eventually beating it), I’ve been seeing some consistent growth.

I’m hoping to keep both tanks in good shape going forward, with the larger tank being more SPS dominant and the smaller tank more softies/LPS. There are too many details to get folks totally up to speed, but I wanted to put a little content up because I’ve enjoyed reading other folks' threads. Hope to add more info soon.

Agreed super nice and clean. Wish/hope I can do mine as clean when I get the stand built!
Thank you! I grabbed a peg board set from IKEA that’s been great for dosing stuff. Probably better if it was out of the stand, but it’s worked ok so far.

I like that idea. I bought some 1/8" chalkboard at Home Depot for mine.

Great setups! Fun to see the progression of the tanks, your corals look happy! Good work painting that stand too, it looks super clean.

You will have to come visit, do some reefer tourism!

Inspired by Ben’s tank update I wanted to add some content here too.

Big tank (90 G) is still chugging along. It really hit its stride this spring (Marchish) and then had to deal with some neglect do to trips, but most of the corals are still growing! Added a couple of SPS frags from TSA, the frag farmers market, and some from club members (thank you Ben and Errol).

Prior to a longer work trip I had to move the powder blue (grew too quickly). Unfortunately lost the melanurus to a jump while I was cleaning too and the fish pop was pretty sparse for a bit. Recently I’ve added a yellow coris, small fox face, and flame angel to bring some life back.

Just sent an ICP off and curious to see what I get back. Still getting about a weekly 15 gallon water change with NYOS salt. Dosing ESV 2 part and kalk (6 g / gallon) with a dosing pump. Swapped over to using salifert test kits too (from Hanna).

Equipment wise not too much has changed. I added a small backup battery from Amazon. Picked up a used NYOS 160 skimmer from a BRS member, and added a very used Radion XR30 (Gen 2) from a friend.

Going to try to update more frequently in the future! Just enjoying the tank and learning as I go. And now for a couple photos:

looks great! Love to see the progress pics and the before trip and after trip pics lol
Man, that was a lot of algae to clean up! Was happy it didn’t happen the second time!

Any advice on getting a situation like that cleaned up? Asking for a friend lol
I think every tank is different, but for me it was: 1) elbow grease and manual removal of the easy to get stuff (glass etc), and 2) and clean up crew reinforcements for things between corals. Got some blue legged hermits (20), pitho crabs (3), and emerald crabs (3) from reef cleaners.

It’s been a bit here and I’ve mostly been busy on the back end of the tank. I was lucky enough to pickup a mixing station second hand, traded the smaller tank for a new sump and a roller mat. I sold some of the nano gear (lights/pumps) and purchased a smaller Kamoer (to pump waste water out of the basement) and a better auto top off for the tank. I’m pretty happy with how things have come along, and my wife is a little aghast her laundry area now has giant tanks! Still having fun and learning. Probably the most impactful change since the last update as adding a CO2 scrubber. This little guy has boosted the pH and noticeably increased growth rates of both the monties and the acros in the tank. Thanks to Ben and the other RI reef folks for the suggestion. One last thing. I’m adding a photo of the tank from just about a year ago. Big changes for the better since then and hoping to keep on rolling.

Keeping to my updates about every 6 months or so here. This tank is continuing on through some ups and downs.

The tank had really hit its stride with some easier SPS (PC rainbow, Cali Tort, the Vin, etc) from the 2024 Fragsgiving and other folks around here starting to take off.

Unfortunately I got a little too clever and decided to hook up a container of Brightwell potassium iodide to does 1 ml a day before going on a 3 week work trip. This worked well, but because the head on the Kamoer pump wasn’t seated correctly after a couple days the pump turned to just the right position to let it siphon the full volume. Or at least this is my main hypothesis for how it all (500 ml) got dosed.

So I came home to off the chart iodine and potassium. Many of the SPS were STNing while the LPS and softies seemed happier than ever. Fortunately I had asked our diligent 11 year old to test alkalinity while I was away and had been able to slow down the dosing of the two part after things hit the fan.

6 or so 40 gallon water changes and about a month later the Iodine was down below 0.1 and I thought the tank might be ready for more SPS and started collecting frags from folks here. Ben (Neverlost) was nice enough to offer up a tester Milka which looked good for a couple of weeks. I got a couple more easy pieces from Joe and Paul which have also started to grow. The monties that survived have also colored back up for the most part. Weirdly some have make some bubbles in their tissue that pop leaving bare spots and that then heal.

Most recently I helped a friend tear down an old tank in prep for a move. This meant taking in some fish and inverts and making room for a really big plate that he’s had for some time. I’m also prepping for a larger frag tub in the back area. I got a nice T5 fixture from a club member that needed some TLC, but is up and running. Hoping to run it over a 50 gallon cattle tank initially.

Adding a couple photos, but it’s a lot to cover!
