A Little Help Please

I recently had a large die off in one of my tanks  I can't figure out what the problem is. I was wondering if anyone near Worcester could come by and see if they can help me.

-Jared

Well you know someone is going to ask it so did you test all parameters?, did you recently do a water change?, add something new? Post the results here and well go from there.

Jared,
That is the first thing I would ask?? Did you finally get your new lights?? Wonder if it could have triggered some die off and fouled the water (just thinking out loud). I might be able to come by and check you system out. PM me.
Andy

can you tell us more about the die off? what are you losing? fish, corals, both?

I could probablly come out your way this weekend sometime and take a look.

I checked my parameters a few days ago and everything was fine. I haven't done any water changes other than topping off the tank. All of my fish are still alive, but I lost a really nice hammer and frogspawn that I got from Ray  . Another hammer of mine is also on it's way out  . None of my zoas are opening  . As you can see the situation is really agravating me.

Jimmyj and wrassefan if either of you or anyone else wants to stop by and help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

What's a good time? I could come out tonight around 8 or a little later. I'll send a PM with my phone # (I won't be able to pick up between 5 and 6:30 but leave a message)

I haven't kept much in the way of LPS but we can still go through the water parameters and try to trouble shoot. Are you seeing a brown jelly like infection or is the tissue just receeding?

Do you have good fresh test kits? how do you measure salinity? Do you have a PH meter so that you can see the day night fluxuations? Could there have been a temp issue or power outage reccently? Seeing any algae blooms? Seeing anything else beyond the dying LPS and irritated zoos?

There is a brown algae growing on my velvet rock which hasn't opened in over a week and on my live rock. Now I know how this hobby can be so expensive. One problem can do a lot of damage. Jimmyj tonight would be great. My cell phone number is 978 609-2951. Thanks.

Jared,

Cool to meet you and check out your tank. (My best guess, a "Brown jelly infection" probablly caused by environmental change on a new frag)

I posted on the reef chemistry fourm on RC with questions re:calcium levels we saw. Hopefully Randy can explain since unlike me he actually does understand chemistry.

The two tentacled thingys you pointed out are IMO
"Sponoid worms. Similar to Terrebelids, but smaller generally, with only two tentacles. These are commonon live rocks and corals, and some in the live sand. They form Chitonous tubes with or without sand attached. Detritivores." (Delbeek & sprung, The Reef Aquarium vol 1. 1994)

when I spoke to Jared last night, it did sound like an infection on one of the LPS and in its demise...could have fouled the water and started a chain reaction. He didn't do a water change or add fresh carbon right away (which is what I recommended he do right away)so the chemicals released from the dying LPS could have triggered a chemical war on the other (now no doing so well) corals.

My impression was that it was a brown jellly infection and the infection itself was spreading to other similar LPS corals. Other stuff, shrooms, zoo's, a sarcophyton,,, looked ok but a bit stressed, possibly from the die off happening, possibly because Jared's salinity was way high since he was a day or two behind in top offs and his hydrometer was off by about .008 compared to my calibrated refractometer.

I brought Jared some fresh RO water so he could mix it and do the water change. We pulled the affected LPS frags and started a canister filter with carbon while I was there. When I left he was starting to bring the salinity back down.

Jared,

Randy replied to my question, the high salinity could easily explain the over the top Ca reading, and hard water top off could also be adding to the Ca level. Let me know when you get the salinity down to about 1.020 on your hydrometer and I can stop over again and we can check everything again.
