A New Dip Found: Hydrogen Peroxide Kills Algaes

OK people. Thanks to Kevin for the advice I treated 10% of hydrogen peroxide to some plugs I had some algae (possible dictyota) on them. After 10 minutes in the solution the algea turned a redish orange color. After 2 days the algae disappeared on it's own. I will keep watch on these plugs to see how they do. But so far the zoas, palys, and SPS are doing great.

I will definitely be adding this new dip to my other dips.

so the coral survives the dip?

Cool........ who would have thought!

We should add a "sticky thread" of dips/treatments in the reef hobby that fellow reefers have had success with.

Matt if you do a search on BRS for treatments/dips on incoming corals you will come up with tons of threads with great info.(And not just the standard stuff) I know people who use/used hydrogen peroxide with success on a few different things and to prevent some things, but can't list them off the top of my head.:o

I have........ you are right.... there is tons of great info on the site. I thought it would be a cool idea to collaboratively construct one thread with dips/treatments fellow reefers have used, why they have used them, and how successful it was. Put that in a sticky, and have that info right there for all the new reefers/BRS members out there that are unaware of the nontraditional/relatively inexpensive successful treatments out there, that aren't store bought $30+ "coral dip".

It was just a thought. :)

It's a great thought, if you look in reef talk there is a thread for useful info, in htat thread they go into quite a few different specific dips for incoming corals and ID'ing the incoming pests. It is a sticky at the top, but, you do have to scroll through a couple of pages to find all the different links. :):)

Cool :)
Sorry Peter for hijacking your thread.

glad to see it works well as a dip. I know people who have used it to treat their FO tanks and it has proven to really beat up the fish down the road...angels especially.

I wouldn't recommend using this on the entire tank. This would be use to dip corals.

Peter,

Do you dip the whole frag of just the plug/rock with algae?

So you did 10% hydrogen peroxide with 90% tank water for 10 minutes?

Perfect I have a whole frag tank to try. I'll post results.

Dawn, used this method years ago to try and fight fungal/bacterial infections on zoas.

I've heard that this can hurt LPS, anyone have any info on this?
