Acrylic Tank Cracked!!! Help

Non-member
I was just about to go to sleep when I noticed a gigantic crack in the acrylic at the top of the tank. It's not really extending into the side walls yet, but I think I see a crack forming.

Is there any way to repair this, or do I have to look for a new 90g?!? HEEELP!!!

Eric

PS Anyone have a 90g tank sitting around???

acrylic is very fixable. you can make a patch and glue it in. id ask gustavo (user name: neo) how exactly he would do it, hes really good with acrylic.

if this helps, mickyb had purchased a very large acrylic tank and it was cracked on the top just like that. I guess its common.

New tank, old tank?
What do you have for lights?

You should be able to reglue that with Weldon

Thanks for the quick replies. I'll PM Gustavo tonight! As for tank age, I'm not sure. I got it used 2 years ago and it was probably at least 5 years old at that point (guessing). For lighting, I have an Aquaspace 2x250 + 1x150 about 10 inches off the tank.

Where do I get Weldon from? Is that a Home depot item?

Should I be draiing this down 20 G or so tonight to be on the safe side?

Not a lot of places carry weldon, not Lowes or HD

Ugh, found another split on the other end of the tank...what the hell is going on tonight!?! At least the second one iis in a slightly less dangerous position.

I need a new tank!

is the crack all the way to the edge? I can't tell from the pic.

This had happened to a 300g. Acrylic tank that was at the shop. A hole was drilled in the acrylic at the end of the crack. The crack went no further.

(another reason I hate acrylic tanks)

most plumbing supplies stores carry weldon.
the lower numbers are thin like water and higher numbers are thick and gooier.
I would use 12 or higher

I have some of the thinner cement and some scrap acrylic. It would not be pretty, but if you scabbed a couple pieces over the cracks it would probably take up the strain and solve the problem. It looks like these cracks are on the top piece of the tank, as such the repairs would be covered by your hood provided you have one. My time is limited around here tommorow, but maybe we could work something out and save you some trouble. I have an old apllicator you could have and you could take a couple pieces of acrylic scrap I have... It is a bit of a ride for you...

LMK,
Dave

altec plastic in south boston carries the weldon and has scrap acrylic for cheap if you need to patch over that crack.

Thanks for all the replies. I agree with you B, before I just merely hated acylic, now I think you can add on loathe and despise. Even patched, I just don't know how much I can trust this tank; another split may just go down a side wall.

I'm going to take a look into just getting a new 90g, or perhaps taking Clam Man's 120 if I can figure out a way to get it from Worchester to Quincy. So, I may be posting soon looking for a truck, either from Boston to Quincy or Worchester to Quincy depending on which way I go (and what truck availability is)!
