Art....I buy it when it is on sale & buy bulk.....Or I buy it in a 300 gal bulk bag for like 85.00...Still much more than than IO but much cheaper than the 70.00 for a 200 gal bucket....
BTW....How much salt do you go thru? I was going thru a bucket every 2 months...I've cut down a bit since then...cut that down in about half now.....
I have been running a phosphate reactor and have been able to cut down my water changes. I now do a 5% water change weekly. It does cut down the amount of salt needed. Brian is also right, buy in bulk when on sale. Right now I have 8 200 gallon buckets because I purchased on a group buy. That should hold me until the next one comes along...
>I was pretty surprised at these numbers. Did the southdown have anything to do with it? I don't know -- <
If you add a lot of fresh sand to a tank (meaning clean, dry sand) sometimes some calcium and alkainity (calcium carbonate) will precipitate onto the surfaces of the sand particles. This is more of a problem in a newly set up tank that might not have a lot of proteins flying around in the water to coat the clean sand surfaces with proteins and thereby slow down precipitation onto the surfaces.
