I have "issues" with my well water even with a RO/DI unit. I changed my 75/20gal sump over to NSW starting the 2nd week of August by changing 18 gal at a time, I have made 7 changes so far and plan one today. I collect sea water on the incoming tide at the mouth of Falmouth harbor place it in a tank in my basement with a mixing close loop and heater and use next day. The change in my tank is like day and night, my soft corals have gone from existing to vibrant, I only have two small SPS but the have gone from the death bed to full polyp extension.
Please note, I do not credit this change to the difference between the use of a salt mix and the use of NSW, for me it's getting rid of well water. The upper Cape has serious problems with it's ground water due to contamination from the base and other sources.
Scott, is your tank sps dominated? If so I would have reservations on 100% switch unless you can ensure the chemistry is similar. One of the keys to sps sucess as you are aware is stability.
Btw, check your PMs every now and then? Dawn and I sent you PMs and you haven't responded!
I wouldnt say it was 100% more like 90% or so
Lam if you saw the conditions of his water you wouldnt think that was as bad as it sounds. I talked to Scott this morn and he said his corals have great polyp ext and look better then they have in a long time!
BTW we collected on an incomming tide in Beverly
Scott I found an even better place to collect not far from there for next time
as for the corals, i took them all out of the tank and plan to re aclimate them after i buffered the tank. all the clam pinch death (crabs and such have dragged the dead clam mantles into the rockwork. 9 dead in all in ~ 3 weeks) which has sent my nitrates through the roof
BTW still working on it..........
going to be a long day.
tanks are full. everything looks A+
RIP mr Blue. and every other clam i have had for a long time
words really can't explain my frustration with this whole Clam pinch CRAP.
i really thought about unplugging the tank when i lost the blue squammi.
i think the little teardrop to the right, 2 " at the time can give you an idea of the size on my big clam. probably bigger than 12". wouldn't fit in a 5gal bucket. just seeing the pics pisses me off.
I lost 2 of my clams after I moved (left them in the 55g too long), then a rose, I've been taking it easy this summer on critters for the tank. It really sucked to lose 2, can't imagine that many
Hey Scott.... I feel your pain. Both of my new Maximas croaked and sent my entire tank into a tailspin. I lost one colony of purple monti digi, my green slimer, my frikin purple rimmed green cap from Gumhead (sigh) and more. My squamosa, which was my first clam and has been outstanding since day one is just about at death's door too.
I've done three different water changes. The first was with 20 gallons of IO. The second two have been with NSW from Falmouth/Vinyard Sound.
The tank is on the rebound, but I'm down to just the three croceas that I bought from B. I'm totally frustrated and was ready to call it quits.
Yep... both the blue/purple one and the gold maxi died. My squamosa has been dipped 3X over the last month and it too is going to die any day now. Funny, the croceas, from what I know, were wild harvested and have shown no problems. They are doing well. It could also be that they are on the top of the reef while the maxi's and squamosa were lower in my system.
Scott, you did the group buy. Did you keep a list of the Buyers? Have we talked to most of the people involved in the buy? I would be interesting to see what per centage had problems after the buy. i don't remember if the buy was done on RC or here.
