Any experience with Algae Turf Scrubber (ATS)?

Swimmin With The Fishies
I was wondering if anybody on here is currently using or has used an ATS for filtration...either by itself or combined with a sump/skimmer etc.

And any thoughts on the concept :.

I read through the 50+ pages regarding the concept and some of its results on the Reef Sanctuary page. I am considering making one to run on my system because I am having a hair algae outbreak and thought it would help to get on top of it. The article had some great information about it. I think that someone posted the link on BRS recently which is what made me look into it.

Leroy is running one with good result. Shoot him a PM, hes always willing to talk/help.

I dunno, seems like a well populated refugium with a 24/7 light source would be easier to setup and do about the same thing. No?

Can you attach the hyperlink to this article?

Thanks

Try this link and plan for a couple of hours to read through the entire thing. http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums...ver-replaces-skimmer-refugium-everything.html
It has figures for what people are seeing for results, as well as images of people's setups. Pretty interesting read.

ya i was reading this as well. definitely sparked my interest since it is claiming to have the benefits of removing phosphates/nitrates without taking out all the goodies in the water column like skimmers do

they are saying it would be cheaper to do a bucket version than plumb a refugium. and also eliminate possibilities of having chaeto/other macro algae floating in your tank

also a refugium would be better to keep a reproducing pod population which the Algae filter does lack

*shoulda multiquoted sorry

I am testing an Algae Turf Scrubber with very good results. I run my lighting for 8 hrs after my refugium lights shut off. The algae needs a photosynthesis time to grow as well as an off cycle. It only cost a few dollars to build and set up easily running off my manifold from the return pump. What I have noticed is my frag disks and plugs under T5's no longer build up algae.

i have a mini ats sitting on top of my hob, its just a plastic mesh that i scratched up with a rock and rubbed some algae on, lit it with an led and its grown to cover the whole thing, its pretty slow, no doubt but i used mine to target specific algaes.

i used to have this black beard lookin stuff so i seeded the scrubber with that, and it spread and now i have none in my tank, hair algae is gone too, i still have this red wirey stuff and along with some macro, its all i have in my tank, i might go ahead and re-seed it with some of the red wirey stuff to see if it will work for me again.

I ran 1 for about 8 months, didn't notice much of a change in water quality. Even purchased a pre-grown pad. But as others have mentioned, easy to setup/build/maintain. Just make sure the lights are strong enough and close to the pad. I built mine from the reef sanctuary link also.

I have a accidental one growing on my pyramid type return on my Neo Nano. I still have hair algae but the tank is still too new to tell a difference.

Are those of you who are using it just using the ATS on the tank and nothing else? (no skimmer/fuge etc) or just throwing it in line with the existing system?
