Any of you guys have a bare bottom

Guess that sound a little different than what I meant.

I am thinking of going with no substrate on my new setup and was wondering what the advantages compared to the disadvantages were if any.

i HATE sand makes a mess and gets on top of corals all the time. i don't have pix for now, but i'll surely post when i take them.

Just recently made the switch ( the weekend of the blizzard ) after a long never ending battle with hair algae , cyano , and coral browning. In just a weeks time I have noticed a unreal increase in color and polyp extension like never before. I am overly glad I did it and do recommend it.

Bare bottom's are a lot more finicky (sp?) than a tank with a DSB. If you let thing's go they go quick there is no buffer (sb). Do some reading and don't just check out new bare bottom thread's try to find old one's pre-DSB. DSB's are going the way BB's went year's ago. Everyone who just recently set up a bare bottom (not just here, anywhere) if they had issue's (algae & nutrient's) with a DSB that was fairly new 1-2 year's unless they completely change there husbandry is going to love it at first but it will snowball much quicker than a DSB. Just like most thing's in this hobby BB's are a fad some will have great luck some will not. Those that do not have luck will then in turn blame it on the BB instead of there own husbandry.

This post may seem like I am a BB hater but it is quit the opposite. I have spent the last seven month's designing my BB system.

I had a barebottom in my last tank and went with barebottom in my new tank. I personally like the fact that you don't need to worry about sand getting all over everything and can have as much flow as you want.

From all I've read it is very important to have a lot of flow to keep detritus off the bottom of the tank and rocks and to have a high powered skimmer in order to have a successful bare bottom tank.

My tank is new so there really isn't much to look at and please disregard the Maxi-Jets laying around, once my Tunze's come in those will be gone!

If you plan on BB, glasscages tanks have a rim of glass around the inside bottom. A little like eurobracing. Just thought I'd mention it.

IMHO, BB looks plain. A reef looks incomplete w/o a sandbed. After all, the ocean has a very deep sand bed

I more or less have a BB ... although the bottom is actually ~ 95% covered with live rock.

I 've got a DSB in the Refugium.

The tank is running with zero nitrates, and I attibute some of this to the BB approach.
