Any suggestions for a good battery operated gravel cleaner?

I don't think you will find anyone one using gravel, if they are not using sand then crushed coral would be the coarsest substrate used.

Oh yes. I have reef sand as a substrate too.. It's just product name is 'gravel cleaner' :)

I have not used that one, but have used 2 others. I got about 3 months life out of them combined. water and batteries just dont work.

I have the exact same thing. It works great with gravel but is a pain in the butt with sand/fine gravel. The sand gets caught in the impellar and then it jams up. It's not too bad if your careful with it, but you can't jam it into the sand like you would with gravel. I used it a couple times with my reef tank but I sucked up more sand then debris. I'd only recommend it for freshwater tanks or a crushed coral subtrate with a very small percentage of fines.

I'd also steer you away from something like this. If you need to vaccum the substrate in a reef tank you have a problem with your set up.

Plan the tank right and the vac is useless equipment IMO/IME.

I agree with John. Look into some CUC that will "turn" your sand over instead.

Would be good for sump cleaning though!?

I've never thought about that. My sump could use a good cleaning and it would be easier than dragging my wet dry vac from the basement.
