Anybody Ever Built A Sound-proof Box?

I have an air pump that is driving me crazy when I try to sleep. Has anyone ever built a soundproof box for one? There is no way to move the air pump out of the room, since I live in a Loft condo. Any ideas?

I built one big enough for me to hop in when the wife and kids were around... but it just didn't pan out.... :D

Seriously though I don't think it'll help.

Most air pumps only make noise from vibrating off of the object its on. Place it on a heavy flat object like a rock or something and it should silence it. What ever you put it on it has to be smooth and very dense.

I hang them with rubber bands as string. The band absorbs the vibration and doesn't shake the object you hang it from. For me they eventually vibrate off of whatever sound absorbing pad I use, so hanging is a better permanent solution.

You could wrap it with a washcloth and rubberband it. That way you can change out the washcloth if it gets a little wet.

Sit it on on a plastic bag of damp sand, this should help a lot.

i have, but nothing for a fish tank west marine or other diesel engine places sell what they call a sound down its foam, lead and foam sandwiched together you can silence anything with it. Ive silenced autopilot pumps and hydraulic pumps this way

Same here :)

Does anyone have suggestions for a quiet, reliable pump? I tried these methods and it did help marginally, but not enough.

It's an air stone skimmer for a nano cube. The air pump is the one that came with the kit from JBJ. I wonder whether or not I can actually get one quieter...any opinions? Their chillers are virtually silent, so I would assume that their air pumps would be as quiet as possible too.

I have the same problem. I upgraded to the best quiet pump available based on other's experience and advice (Luft pump by Tetra, now Coralife) and it still makes enough noise for me to hear it.

I've been planning on bulding a small wood box with soundproofing material inside and out to muffle it for a while, but haven't gotten around to it. The trick is to make sure there is a way for there to be airflow as well, because you don't want it to overheat either.

Which one do you have?

I have one of the larger Tetras too, and you can hear them.

I guess it depends partially on how sensitive you are to noise.

Great idea with the rubber bands!! :)
