anyone know where i might be able to buy a Moorish Idol??

krystal clear aquatics gets them quite frequently. they are also very successful at keeping them fat and happy. i think they go for about $45 for a big one there

Tropic Isle also occasionally gets some, they are a tough fish to keep so just make sure you do your research

No experience at all with them, but have heard of difficulty. Oddly, I found this old book - out borrowed ATM, about keeping captive aquaria back in the 60's, and the author mentions that the Idols are one of the easiest fish to keep. ;)

I'll be the first to say it.
If you don't consider yourself an expert don't bother getting one.
Also if you don't have at least a very large system that's well aged, don't bother getting one.
I only tell you this because"Gill"is a VERY hard fish to keep.I know a few folks that have been in this hobby a long time that have not had much luck. And even when they do,it's short term. For instance one of the owners of a LFS that sells these fish has an employee that's tried a few times to keep one in the home aquarium without any luck. They basically starve pretty much like a mandarin will without pods that's not eating frozen mysis.
I am not looking to discourage you,but make you aware of the difficulty.
I wish you luck if you do purchase one.:)

i recently trained my mandarin to eat frozen food over a couple months, i have pods in my tank now and i plan on weening him onto live brine then slowly to frozen....im up for the challenge and i figured for the low price of this fish i would give it a try

The question is "is the fish up to it?"

How big is your tank? How old? How much research have you done?

Not trying to be a jerk, but IMO this is a fish that just shouldn't be imported at all. VERY few people are really "up to trying it", and most of those who are still can't keep the fish alive. It's kind of like buying livestock at petco, Every fish they sell leads to 2-3 more that they kill.....

There is a reason you don't see these fish for sale in the critters thread.

Here's an old thread.Notice Frank Marini (author and expert on marine fish) comments on this species.

This is my last comment here.No need hijack this.
Just hoping the O.P. will reconsider.

Stingy has it correct. It is easy to keep them short term. Long term is the problem for most. There is one in Falmouth Pet right now that has a veracious appetite and will eat everything. It will need to go into a larger sized marine aquarium with a lot to naturally graze on and have a varied diet as possible. Sharks, rays, some groupers etc should just not be sold in the trade amongst many other fish but they will be b/c that's how some people are.

got one.....eats everything and looks nice, he seems fine and happy so lets see what happens

Try to keep a log with him, I love these fish, and would love to have one. I have heard nothing but "dont get one" I have heard it from many sources, so I just enjoy them from afar. Good Luck.
