Anyone successful w/ a moorish idol?

Moe_K

Stabbed by Foulke
Is anyone out there successfully keeping a moorish idol? Real purdy fish, but they usually starve in captivity.
Maybe somebody has one that is thriving on prepared foods?
If so, I'd like to hear about it.

Oooh, I want one soo bad.... They usually never survive, but there is a better survival rate in a group of three in a shallower tank from what i read

i had one for almost a year.
lost while on vacation....
What was it eating?
Was it nice and healthy, thick, or was it slowly wasting away?

Joe V. (Salty Old Dog) has one that eats flake. I believe he has had it for years now.

you can always get the fake one (the butterfly fish).

bump..This is going to be my next fish, i hope.

Steevareno...sadly they don't mix with your ricordieas. Specifically the ones on your avatar. But....I can help you unload em anytime! :D

idols are not "reef safe" :) They will eat polyps of sort (mainly LPS, zoos, rics etc)
If they are caught correctly, decompressed correctly and shipped correctly, they usually do fine. Small ones at 3" or less do MUCH better in captivity. Never buy one bigger then 4".. it will not live. If you do ever get one, get it directly from the collector NOT the wholesaler! skipping this step is critical, unneeded stress that the idol cannot take. Plus a very large tank is a must.
:)
Im still strongly against collecting them even though they are easy to get. Not many people can properly take care of them and i dont like seeing fish slowly waste away.

:( ok, maybe not. Thanks for the info upfront, could have been a costly mistake!

>shallower tank<

Never heard of that. I did seriously consider one for my 400 G, but after reading about how they sometimes take to mowing down corals I changed my mind. Pygme angels that peck at corals don't bother me since they tend to spread the damage around. My understanding was that with a Moorish Idol they may target a coral and destroy it.

The new LFS on main st in salem NH has a Moorish idol for sale. there fish prices arnt bad but there dry goods are a little up there. Just stoped in this morning.

Try look alike for the moorish idol:
Black and White Heniochus Butterfly - Heniochus acuminatus
Also known as: Long-Fin, Reef, Schooling Bannerfish

marinedepotlive_1897_2413038

General Notes: Heniochus acuminatus (Linnaeus 1758) is most often seen in the hobby and trade. Their most common, common names are Reef and Schooling Bannerfish, but both are found in pairs to groups in the wild. The latter species can be distinguished by its much smaller snout/mouth, and more angular anal fin. Juveniles are facultative cleaners in the wild. Long-Fin Bannerfish. Not reef safe as it is known to pick at coral polyps - especially zoanthids, fanworms and feather dusters.

A whole bunch of people in the club got heniocuses at one point and almost non of them lived. That was odd because they are almost always noted as hearty. I was interested in getting several for my tank until I saw the size they get to. Those things can be the size of a small diner plate. Way to big for most of our tanks.

I had a great one but after 2 years i had to remove it as it was causing a lot of damage to lps corals. They actually have a pair of fangs which fold into there mouth like a snake it is strange to see. This beaut ate everything from mysis, brine, even pellets which were on a timer/feeder for 4 times a day.
