that's how mine is set up. My first chamber in my sump is filled with live rock then it overflows into the next chamber that has my Mag3 pump for my Aqua C. The output of the skimmer dumps into my refugium, then to some baffles then to my Mag 7 return.
This way the level for the skimmer never gets below overflow point so i don't have to worry about that affecting its performance.

FWIW I have my bak pak skimmer in sump and it's pulling out more junk that it was when it was HOB. I don't have any room for it to hang on the sump...
