Are Refugiums Useless

I have a 180 gallon dedicated refugium , along with a 40 gallon sump on my 180 display, I know its over the top but i never have nitrate or phosphate issues and i only change water once a month.

I dont think thats overboard, I think thats awsome. If u have the room, then why not. I think my new setup will just be the 40 gal sump, the skimmer, a dual reactor, and my return pump.

That is not over the top. When i buy a house i will have a 200 gallon refugium, a 40 breeder as a sump and another 100 gallon tank with just water. All that for a small tank (under 100 gallons). It is all about water volume, in my opinion, that is the best way to do it.
So i will have 340 gallons supporting less than 100 gallons.

sounds like a good plan to me ! i love the stability of the volume

my dual chamber calcium reactor was my best purchase.... no dosing is awesome!

I might need one soon. My tank uses 80ppm of calcium and 2dkh every day.
So far I am dosing around 31mil of the BRS two part bulk package. The 3 gallons I got will last for a while, but the clams are growing fast and I am up to 40 heads of candy cane. Rocks are ckvered in coraline, so that is using a lot of it.

Can you PM what calcium reactor you have?

I have decided with this design. I am only going to place some live rock in the sump. NO FUGE

looks good but i would reverse the dividers between the filter socks and skimmer so the water overflows the second panel and the water has to go thru the sock

dual chamber MRC
-Size: 12"x12"x21"
-40 lbs CO2 tank
-Circulating Pump Mag 2
-Sump MaxiJet 1200 powerhead to reactor
aqua medic regulator and Milwaukee ph monitor

I love it ... i had a milwaukee regulator but it was always messing up .

Let us know how this design works. I took advantage of the $1 gallon sale today at petco and grabbed a 20g long

Refugiums are not useless if they are done the right way. Having a small 3"x5" rectangle with chaeto in a 100 gallon tank is almost useless. having a 40 breeder where one half is full of chaeto and live rock, and the other half has a skimmer, and heaters is not useless.

I personaly dont put any divisions in my sumps because I think (personal opinion) that they just waste space. My Skimmers outtake is right above my return pump and i never had a micro bubble issue in any of my tanks. So, what i do is throw 2-3 big live rocks, and trap the chaeto in between. I like to form a U shape and trap it in a corner. The chaeto stays together and I have a pwoerhead that creates flow in the refugium/sump (on top of the flow created from the overflow and skimmer). The result is a refugium/sump that has no dirt or rotten food in corners, because it has plenty of unrestricted flow.

That is the way I do it, and I am not saying it is the best way, or that my way is the only right way. But it does 100% solve the issue of accumulated crap and 'how do I clean my sump?" issues.

Hi P-nut
I'm setting up a 80 gal tank with a 40 gal sump / fug. Your refugium setup sounds nice. If you have time could you post some pictures. I would love to see how you arrange the rock, cheto, and power head to keep it clean.

Well here it is. I took your advice Bill about reversing the first dividers.

It is a 40 breeder, and im planning to stick it under a 90 gallon reef ready. I was going to upgrade from a 90, but I have that unbelievable canopy that Joelg (who also lend me a huge hand in building this sump) built for me. So for me its def. worth staying at that size. Tell me your thoughts
