Are there any stores local that price match online places?

Nocturnal

Habitual Line Stepper
For example:
I need a Mag18/24. Online I can get one for about 110, but I was in store (X) the other day and a Mag12 was $189. This particular store tends to be a bit pricey anyway, but I was just wondering if any of our vendors do anything like that or even have competetive pricing for items such as pumps

Wrong thead, Nate?

I moved this out to Reef Talk, since it's not really a report of an experience with a vendor, nor is it a query seeking info on experiences with a particular vendor.

If it's decided the thread belongs in the VE forum, we can move it back there.

It's hard for local companies to price match and online vendor. They have overhead to deal with and such. We deal with this all the time in my business and it just isn't fair to ask them to price match an online vendor.

Yeah I honestly didn't think there would be a place, but ya never know.
I would love to give a local guy the business but not at the price of spending 60-70 more than I need to.
Oh well

I don't know of any local vendors that price matches. It is probably too cost prohibitive for them to do so based on all of the overhead that they have versus many on line retailers that either drop ship or have a giant warehouse filled to the top. I have heard that in some instances the price that the consumer may pay on line is cheaper than the price that the local vendors buys it for from his distributor.

Couldn't hurt to call around though.

Don’t forget there is a cost to ship and you don’t get that eye-to-eye personal service you get local or the help and easy return if things go wrong. All this is worth something so make sure you add this into the price. Also some will deal a little but don’t expect a match. After all they have kids in collage to.

price match

If your looking for a great price try John at Sea Creatures in N.Providence.
I have had the best luck there. He is always willing to help and has the best prices I've seen so far.

There was a place up Portsmouth NH called Little Shop of Pets I know its not locall but it would be worth the drive there prices were hard to beat lots of coarls, dry goods, or fresh water. But again i'm not sure if the store is still there good luck.

I was always pleased with the competetive pricing at my favorite stores, and often found them willing to make a deal on multiple items, or when making a big purchase. However I don't expect online pre-shipping prices at a local brick and mortar. I have been suprised on more than one occasion though, that Aqua Addicts for instance, had prices that were the same as online prices for some stuff. And on lots of stuff prices were similar if shipping was accounted for.

I wouldn't count on it ;)

Make sure before any purchase, online or retail, you ask what is the warranty and return policy.

Usually :D But your correct to always ask what is the warranty and return policy.

I got my mag 9.5 from AA, they did not quite match the price it cost me a couple of bucks more but to get it without waiting for shipping and supporting a local store it was worth it, it never hurts to ask any store the worse they will say is no and it at least gives them a shot at getting the business. They have price matched on other items for me as well even special orders.

I agree with John, Aqua addicts in Salem NH tends to be about as competitive as it comes to dry goods. You'll probably wind up spending a few more dollars, but you'll also have someone to talk to if something goes wrong outside of the company!

animal instinsts in fall river will, I think, I say I think because when I was buying my lights the kid/guy at the counter said to go online and find the best prices and then come back, and the store will match it. I never did go back, but if your in the area worth a shot

Ditto on AA in Salem, NH! I bought an item there that had been on sale online but theshipping charges would have made it even out. No tax, no shipping charges and no waiting!

I wouldn't ask them to price match, but anything off would be great...I always support my lfs, even if i have to pay more...The added service is PRICELESS!!! Skiptons has always taken care of me on anything i've ever needed gone above and beyond, so the extra difference from online sales is negligable to me.

Yeah its still here

I use www.DrsFosterSmith.com for my school orders and they have the Mag 18 pump for $119.99 and the Mag 24 for $134.99 on sale. They are very quick in shipping and they have an online parts department as well. I had a tank from them that I had for almost a year and it started to leak. I called them and they replaced it with a new one. I am always impressed with their customer service.
