Attention Newbies

Im pretty new to the reefing world. I don't have a lot of experience to offer, but I do have one big one. Like me you're going to start looking at forums to do research and then shortly after that. You will be looking at frags to buy, Im not gonna call out people on here but, even if they tell you they have to pest or bugs in there tank please do not just believe them because they seem nice. I mean you have money in your pocket of course there gonna be nice to you!!!!

Looking back at it a lot of reefers on here know each other and seem to be friends but guess what... they will not hesitate to talk smack about each other. Its like Im in high school again... Here are some quotes I hear very often

"Man i heard that guy has flatworms"
"Oh that guy had flatworms a while back don't buy from him buy from me"
"Im clean man been clean for a while now just watch out for other reefers"

I've heard these 3 quotes from three different people and guess what they all say it about each other its freaking amazing!!!

A lesson I learned is that dip everything because some people are in it for the money and guess what. Chances are there gonna chose your money over being honest about it. Maybe they don't know they have bugs in there tank but if your selling frags to make money off of people I would think you would know if you had bugs.

*Also if you look at my feedback score its none of those guys* The other reefers must be to busy selling other things to leave feedback. Maybe they should check there tanks instead of chop shop reefing

Yep, this stuff goes on all the time.

In the FWIW category, iodine dips don't always get AEFW's. You have to be very careful, they can go undetected for a VERY long time in someones system without any of the obvious tell tale symptoms.

On the other hand, some might have problems and just not know it.

Regardless of who I buy from, I still do my SIX hour dip and QT frags

A good question to ask when buying and looking at corals is to ask if they dip and what they dip with? If they cant give you an educated answer chances are they dont dip....good thread.

Definitely good practice to treat every frag you get as if it has every pest out there. I always tell people that buys frags from me to treat with betadine/interceptor for the appropriate time frames, regardless of the fact that I have no pests to the best of my knowledge. I also tell them if they find anything, please let me know so I can take appropriate measures to fix the problem. Like already stated above, some of these pests can go undetected for long periods of time, so the seller may not know that said pest is present in his/her system.

I agree that is sucks and some people say this or that but is your responsibility to educate yourself about the potential risks in the hobby. If you did a search on here about flatworms, I guaranty that dipping comes up.

It is not someones responsibility to provide pest free frags (although mention about it is nice) it is your responsibility to make them pest free.

Yeah I agree that its on the person buying to make sure they dip. But at first I had no idea it was that important, but like any new person into a hobby you get super excited about buying new toys. You just tend to believe people that they know what there doing and that everyone had good intentions. Selling infested corals its a dick move if you ask me, the headline is "Attention Newbies" of course.

Theres so many things to worry about when getting into the hobby that dipping seems to get over looked. Everyone was always talking about live rock and live sand and just the newbie stuff. My point is to all the guys that have been doing this for years now and are selling frags and corals... Please if you have bugs tell people you do instead of worrying about other chop shop reefers. I dont buy the whole they dont know they have bugs BS.

Sad to say but so true no matter who it is, no matter how much you trust them, always dip everything. Quarantine is also recommended.

Sometime people have things and they have no idea. When AEFW hit I remember Nate Hanson coming out about a year after he sold everything off, stating he might have had AEFW. Everyone lined up to say No I bought from you and I don;t have them. Then over then next few days the truth unfolded.

I bring up Nate because he made a post coming clean and warning all people who may be affected, but the damage had been done. Back then we didn't know that much about them the only treatment we knew was to run the tank with Acros for 6+months to be safe.

Here is the thread

Remember that it is like the Suave Shampoo commercial "I'll tell two friends, and they'll tell two friends, and so on, and so on"

Anyone use Revive??

I see alot of people using it on R2R.

I guess this was just a little venting because before all of this I just used coral rx pro for dip. Now I have to get Interceptor and use that because people like to make a side living on selling infected coral. It bothers me because some of these guys are still selling stuff as we speak. Its only going to get worse unless newbies like me are informed of things like this... Sad to say but its like STD's pretty soon everyone that isnt aware will have something. lol

Shouldn't interceptor be part of your dipping routine anyways.

Is this a question or a statement? I didn't know i needed it until recently. If its such a common thing to use interceptor then maybe it should be in the Neebie section

More of a question and wasn't meant to be negative in any way. I understand that many newbies get anxious about putting corals but with anything, research and preparation lead to success.

Maybe it would help if more sellers advised newbies that they should be dipping every new coral they introduce to their system.

On a side note, I have some extra tabs if you have a tough time getting your hands on interceptor.
