Bacteria dosing?

Hi all,

Reading @Cpage101’s recent build thread update has gotten me curious on what are people’s thoughts on bacteria dosing? Is it snake oil? Or has it made an observable difference in your tanks?

There are many kinds of bacteria’s on the market. I have not seen any real difference other than when I was dosing PNS probio. I don’t think there is a need. i don’t think it is a noticeable thing unless you do a bacteria test before and after to see any real difference. When dosing the PNS probio the polyp extension difference was noticeable. anything noticeable would be antidotal if anything.

So that’s what I’ve heard too. PNS seems to be different in that it has a much better experience from people either in terms of feeding coral or beating cyano. Wonder what makes it different from microbacter etc.

microbactor ect… is allegedly just nitrifying bacteria

I used to dose prodibio weekly until it was no longer available, but from what I've heard Red Sea picked up the line and will be distributing it going forward.

Ngl cpage's post also got me curious about the PNS strains. I got a small bottle just to experiment what it does as seeding.

I heard the PNS deep
cycle is a good booster

I finished the 16 oz of probio and deep cycle. I dosed it over the past 3 weeks and more occasionally than the instructions recommended. Figure I'll report back on my experience. Just a subjective take on my end with it, not really a controlled experiment, so take it with a grain of salt.

Overall I think it did improve my water quality and clarity. I've noticed my water got visually cleaner and more crystal clear. The skimmer now pulls darker (black instead of green) skimmate without increasing thickness. So there's definitely some changes I've noticed to the skimmer performance, personally I think it's a positive one. I did have two acro frag that RTNed recently but I don't think it had to do with the PNS. It also reduces the rate algae grow on my glass, so I need to scrape less. Overall the corals seem to be doing better after seeding it with the bacteria, likely due to the water quality improvement from it.

I have high NP level all the time (N 30+, P 1-2 ppm), so it's hard to tell if it made any impact to the NP level.
