Bad things happen in 3's right?

Well after hearing about Jim's flood I started thinking how to make my system less prone to mishaps. Well someone must have been laughing at me cause I just went down into my basement and my frag/refugium tank is spilling over and the sump is 1" away from running dry and burning out my new external pump. Yup something was blocking the overflow. One of those hard working snails crawled up and got stuck blocking the flow. Two questions- What can I use to cover my overflow so that does not happen again? and can I put a cover on my overflow box of my main tank so I don't get a snail in the drain line?

Thats what I did..... My overflow is critter proof.........

That looks familiar....hubby cut one just like it for me....NOTHING gets in the overflow except H2O, and because the cover is black, nothing (ie algae) grows in their either. (I still check every once-in-awhile, though).

Best addition ever....

My hubby cut a couple pieces of black slate to cover mine. Works like a charm and no algae growth anymore.

Thanks for the pics, I know am the proud owner of a cover so hopefully no more floods

I just put strainers on my pipes. works just as well. I dont see algae in the overflows being bad..its like having another fuge.

I felt the same way for a long time. The only issue I had is that with the AGA Megaflow, the algae would build up between the two overflow walls, and clog it within a week. this would not likely be a problem on a single walled overflow
