Brownish Area on Sand???

What may this be? It's centralized to this area, and only this area. Also on one rock, there is a dark redish type coraline. Any advise?

Hard to tell from the pic. Diatoms possibly?

I'd say the first two are cyanobacteria.

looks like diatoms to me, or it could be the beginning of cyano. The "brown" discription, however, sounds like diatoms.

Dark red coraline type stuff -- probably dark red coraline... ;)

Last pic of pink thing looks like a sponge. I've got a couple, so I hope it's a sponge... :p

*** OK... rethinking Moe may be correct. The brown stuff seems to be in a area that probably gets less flow. I'm thinking it is probably the beginning of cyano.

If the Localized brown spot is Diatoms or Cyano, how is it started and how do you guys/gals deal with it?

And btw, thank you for the quick responses! That's why I frequent this site.

Assuming your tank isn't new, more frequent water changes, a clean up crew, and aggressive protein skimming should solve the problem. Also lessen feeding until it is under control.

Second on everything above there, but phosphate reduction thru a phosban reactor should be on the table too.

What are your params, specifically Alk, phosphates and nitrates? Algae won't grow without fertilizer.....

Phosphates and Nitrate test are showing Non Existent which is alittle weird for the type of growth. BUT, I was away in Paris for 10 days, and come to find out my Fiance was using tap water to top off instead of the RO/DI water I left for her to top off with.

Alk was reading 8dkh.

Nitrates and phosphates can be zero because they are all bound to the algae. Tap water is probably the source of your problem so I wouldn't sweet it too much because its probably not a design flaw which will cause you long term problems.

Perfect. Things should sort itself out once I start a water change. I figure I will do a 20% change tomorrow, and another 10% 2 weeks later.

Thanks again for all the advise!

"sweet it" LOL my spelling is so bad!

Looks like cyano to me. I have some on my sand bed from the tank swap, I went with an all new sand bed so that is to be expected
