BRS Sept 2007 meeting (featuring Ron Hessing & Randy Holmes-Farley)

Hi all,

The next regular meeting for the BRS will be Saturday 29Sep2007 from 12pm-5pm at the Snowden Auditorium in Wheatley Hall at UMASS-Boston (Dorchester, MA).

Click here for a link to a map.

Here's a link the the campus map, to make it easier to find Wheatley Hall

Parking in the South Lot (lower right corner of map) is best. Might be a charge to park that day, but frequently the lot is open on the weekends.

This venue is really easy for public transportation. The Red Line stop JFK/UMASS is right down the road, and there's a free shuttle bus (every 15 mins on weekends) that drops off right outside Wheatley Hall. It's also very easy to park in the Star Market lot adjacent to the T stop and take the shuttle bus to the school.

The auditorium should hold 300 people, easily.

The meeting is scheduled to run 12pm-5pm. An agenda will be posted in the near future.

We will have two guest speakers:

  • [*]Ron Hessing who will discuss European reefkeeping trends and methods
[*]Randy Holmes-Farley who will continue our discussions on chemistry in reef aquaria

We can have our usual frag swap at the end of the event, in the lobby behind the auditorium.

We expect to have a vendor or two with some goodies to show off for the crowd.

More details will be posted as they are defined.
Stay tuned.

Ooops, yeah. 29 Sept.
I'll update the posts.

looking forward to being there, as i have been out of the loop for a little while now.

Feel free to ask any questions about the meetings in this thread. :)

I don't know the answer to that Jeff.
I'll make sure one of the BRS officials chimes in.
Thanks.

For paid-up registered members there is no fee. Non-members will be charged $5 each or $10 per family at the door. BRS members please bring your cards as we will be checking at the door. We can look you up in the database as well, but it may slow things down a lot.

This will be my first meeting, and I am really looking forward to it :D
In regards to the "swap" will there be frags for sale, or only trade?

There are usually more frags for sale these days than available for trade.
Check out the "Frag swap thread" stuck to the top of this forum.
Stickies.... use 'em and love 'em. :)

Can we register for BRS membership at the door? Or is there a better way to become a member...?

Yes, you can join at the meeting.
Probably the easiest way to join.

Randy's Bio:

Randy Holmes-Farley has a BA in chemistry and biology from Cornell University (1982) and a PhD in chemistry from Harvard University (1986). He has 57 patents, numerous publications and several awards in a variety of chemical fields. In 1992 he helped start a pharmaceutical company (GelTex Pharmaceuticals). It was eventually bought by Genzyme where he now has the title of Vice President, Chemical Research. Randy is also the co-inventor of two commercial pharmaceuticals (Renagel and WelChol).

Randy has been keeping reef aquaria for just over 10 years. He has been active on a variety of reef internet forums for that same period, and has been especially involved in chemistry-related discussions. For the past four years he has moderated The Reef Chemistry Forum at Reef Central. He has authored numerous reefkeeping articles with a chemistry emphasis for Fishnet, Aquarium Frontiers, Advanced Aquarists online magazine, and Reefkeeping online magazine.

Ron' Bio:

Ron Hessing is reef keeper, photographer, author, forum administrator and webmaster of his site www.marineaquarium.nl. Ron has been involved with the marine aquarium hobby for almost 16 years. The first snorkeling experience at Aruba was the start. For the last six years he has maintained his own 250 gallon SPS dominated reef.

Ron’s fascination with marine aquaria has resulted in his continuous search to find the best tanks and techniques in Western Europe. Much of this information is displayed on his own internet site. As an author he has delivered articles for the Dutch reef keeping magazine and online magazines. An article about the system of David Saxby, London has brought great reviews.

Ron lives in the centre of the Netherlands, with his wife, three sons, two dogs and a parrot. In the Netherlands and Belgium he gives lectures at aquarium associations. In 2006 he did his first lecture overseas at Nerac II, Lireef NY, and also spoke at the recent Marine Aquarium Conference of North America (MACNA) held in Pittsburg, PA.

Just a reminder about parking in the UMASS parking lot...
They do charge 6 or 8 bucks to park in their lots.
Many times in the past, however, on weekends they don't enforce the parking charge. Sometimes, they will enforce the charges on weekends.
So plan on paying if you park at the school. If they're not charging, we win!

There are other options for parking that are free. See the first post in this thread for those options.

good seeing everyone today. :)
