building a glass tank

well all the drawing is really trying to convey is the glass pane sizes..

so i'll just list them..
Bottom pane 48"x24" (3/4" thickness)
Front pane 48"x19.25" (starfire 1/2" thickness)
Back pane 48"x19.25" (1/2" thickness)
Right side 23"x19.25" (starfire 1/2" thickness)
Left side 23"x19.25"

So set up that way it would be a tank with verticals panes on top of bottom pane, and front/back panes in front of side panes. I don't know if this is the best set-up for my tank however?

Thoughts?

The dims and thicknesses look good to me, build it!
I believe you can use 1/2 on the bottom with out any issue, either or would work fine.

well it was recommended that i use 3/4", and i don't really have an issues with that if it makes the tank sufficiently stronger... but i'm not sure how it makes the tank stronger.. i want to make sure i construct the tank properly so that it can take advantage of that extra thickness in the bottom pane?

Sounds pretty good to me Joel.
Go for it man, do not forget to post the build.
I think we are getting this here diy forum going good lately lets keep it going.

Awesome Joel! Glad to hear you are going to get this build going, I'm no expert but your plans sound great to me, very thought out.........

anyone got some ideas as to where to buy glass? I can travel to the Boston area if it's a solid deal.. I had a good quote from one place.. but not sure if that offer is still on the table, and to be honest i'm not sure what type of work they do?

Thoughts?

Peabody Glass in Peabody.
Their prices always seamed pretty good to me, no guarantee's though.

That;s if you want to travel up this way.

It is 1/4 mile from my house stop in and say hi if you are in the area.

I stumbled on this thread from an unrelated search. But I do know of a decent glass place. Contract Glass in Wilmington (800-649-9957). They are also a tempered glass manufacturer. Most of the other glass shops in the area get their tempered glass from Contract.
