Can’t get a nitrate or phosphate reading

I can’t skim dryer than this. This is 10 days worth. I’m over feeding salmon, but can’t get a phosphate or nitrate reading. I have a 235 which is lightly stocked atm. Never thought I would have this problem. I’ll be adding more fish after fishing season is over.

If you’re not getting a reading on nutrients, why are you skimming? Shut it off add more fish. What other mechanical filters are you using? Filter socks? Might want to pull those also until you get things in control. Pictures will help. GL

Not going to stop skimming all together. I still have a very light bio load. Pictures of what? This was more of a statement than a question. I know I need more fish. I have about 350 gallons total, so it’s going to be a bit. Fish are pricey these days. I remember being able to get hawaiin yellow tangs for $30 at Petco. Things are very much under control. I was just throwing this out there. Just takes some patience. My system has only been up and running since March.

Gotcha, I was thinking of what other mechanical filtration you are using. A picture of sump would show what’s happening there. Personally if I wasn’t seeing nitrates or phosphate I would be worried of Dynos. I would shut down skimmer and do water changes instead when nitrates rise and are needed. A lot of newer reefers use a lot of different mechanical filtration when they’re system just doesn’t need it. This causes unnecessary issues. Anyways I have a beautiful Emperor for-sale :)

I appreciate the input. I’m not a newbie though. I just had to take a long break. Dong was the first person I met in the club about 25 years ago, so I get some great advice. I don’t use mechanical filtration unless the water isn’t as clear as I like and I’ll throw a filter sock on with a little carbon for a couple of days. I’m a very “keep it simple” guy.

It is funny how things change, then end up going back. It wasn’t long ago, we were all trying to get lower nutrients. Now we are making sure they don’t bottom out.

And I understand why you want to keep skimming, and it definitely helps with oxygenation. But you could think about leaving the skimmer set to dry like it is now, and maybe put it on a timer.

You can have the 42G of water I am changing tomorrow it’ll give you some nutrients Po4 currently .10 and No3 42.5 :)

Thank you, but I’m just going to let nature take its course. I like my fish fat, so I don’t skimp on feeding. I’ll be adding more fish after bass fishing season is over and I flip into full reef mode. I’m feeding fresh salmon blended up. The fish absolutely love it. I’ve had no problem building up nutrients in the past, so they’ll come. Just never thought I would be hoping for a reading.

You want some of my water?
Thank you, but as stated above, I’m just going to let nature take its course. I feed my fish enough that they will show up at some point. I only have 7-8 fish so far with approximately 350 total water volume. Good to see you’re still here!
